Hello everyone. As you can tell by my username, it is very important to me that my laptop not have a whine or squeal. I have been reading the other threads and many users report a whiny sound from the cpu. Are these isolated incidents or is this the norm?

Also, can you return to Dell because of this? What about restocking fees?

    Please post your experiences!

it's just the dvd drive. cpu fan is quiet unless you're playing games. It's not that noticeable

I'm also considering buying a M1330, but I started having some doubts since I've seen some people complaining about the whine. Is it really an odd-ball thing or is it widespread among the entire M1330 series?

my 1210 whines all the time with no CPU usage. i just installed RMCLOCK, and its gone for good.

RMClock is probably a necessary for laptops that can use it anyways. It lets them run much cooler, and you have much more control over stepping.
my 1210 has seen load temps down by +10c.

heres a guide to quiet the whine IF you have it.

That's not an option IMO, why should the user have to fix a defect? your hardware shouldn't have to be bound to a program.

And what if you run Linux?

I could have used RMClock with my M1210 but am getting it replaced free by dell with a much upgraded M1330 because of the squeal.

I tried RMClock and yes it cools the processor temperature but it also knock a full hour off your battery life after each charge...

    Not an option.

The answer is simple because the squeal may remain or it may go away; advise Dell and discuss options. If you dont, you cant blame them for not believing you later on or stalling on your complaints.

I write this only because I went through this and even took part in assisting to try and identify the problem with their L3 Support Team in Ontario (via phone as I walked them through different issues related to the problem).

If you let them they will just send a new motherboard then another then another then a new hard drive then another then another then a new DVDrw then another then a new battery then another. The best part is the repair guy who keeps coming to your house to fix the problem will love you and thank you for the snacks and you will become best buds...

Sounds funny eh...ITS NOT!!! lol ok just a little.

There is another option. If it whines, call and state you would like a replacement. Everyone i have advised has had a new system shipped and then they returned the original (this is not new to just this system).

All in all....you must be upfront and communicate with XPS support though.

PS I seem to be the recognized expert here and on Dell forums because of the thread that I ramrodded and assisted in getting some M1210 owners new systems. Many believe i was instrumental in the m1210 being pulled. I have abs no probs answering questions via PM or here.

if u follow that link i posted, battery life doesnt suffer one bit. That said, if i have any future problems with it, im sure XPS support will be nothing but helpful.

the computer is dead silent now, and has 5+ hrs of battery life on the 9

If your battery life doesnt suffer...the reduction is well documented on dell.ca. My question would still remain why would you allow yourself to settle for a fix for something you paid so much for??

On a further note, I have heard very little of the squeal being reported in that processor...

And further...if your getting 5plus hours I really want to know what adjustments you have made to get that (bt off/quikset off/no virus/no sidebar/no transparent windows etc.... I know of only one system to get more and that is with everything turned off and the system is being used as a Word processor.

PS.. I will concede though I have marked that link a few days back and havent tried it as I am in Virginia on vacation. It does have different values to be entered in executing the program that I haven't tried yet...

im running everything undervolted too. BT off, wifi on. Screen at 50%. internet surfing mainly, some IMing.

i just got 5hrs 3min, on my stopwatch.

why would i settle for something less than what i paid for? well because i wanted the 1210, and i spent very little on what i got :)

And in your case great!!! You are happy and thats al anyone wants. Im gonna try to match the battery when i get back...five hours will be neat to see.

Comparing though, I believe i will be able to beat it with the m1330 Im waiting for... less power consumption on the LED as well as the SSD hard drive which means absolutely no spinning hard drive.....

I am hoping to do a review on it.

i look forward to seeing what you have to say about the 1330. Im sure its a step in the right direction for the xps's. Although i still love the form of the 1210, just a great little puter.
