I don't care much for the Roxio that comes with the XPS m1530, so a friend of mine is sending me the Nero 7 Ultra Edition. Anybody know about this one and use it?
    Opinions?

IMO, Nero is much better than Roxio. I've got Nero 6 on an XP machine and Nero 8 on my laptop (sig). I totally bypassed ver. 7 but I'm sure it's just as good. Just make sure you get all the updates and check for Vista compatibility.

Fwiw, the Roxio version that ships with the Dell laptops aren't even fully functional. A lot of the important features are either trial or totally disabled. So already you will be better off uninstalling it! :)

IMO both are crap, they have so many stuff you dont really need (well atleast i dont need)
albeit you can remove things like nero media indexing service (why the hell did they include such a thing , it hurts computer performance so bad) its bothersome
if you want to do simple stuff like
    burning cd/dvd images
    create images from disc
    verify disc write data
    create images from files

ImgBurn is more than enough just google it, its very simple and lightweight

PD: sorry about my english but its not my native language, in case i made any errors or i wasnt clear enough just say so

nero in reality is overpriced bloat ware. For example, Imgburn + dvdshrink = nero recode. Samething except nero isnt free. Personally I do pay for and use nero because even though it has alot of features that I dont need and costs a bit it ALWAYS work

imgburn is probably the best image burning software tool but it certainly isnt a nero replacement

i agree with you, but id rather use lots of different (and good) tools like imgburn, dbpoweramp, etc... instead of nero (wich performs a decent job but has crappy services and is somewhat slow)

All I want to do is burn photo's onto CD or DVD's and maybe with a slide show. I get paid to do a few car shows, car clubs and do photography & websites for them. I got this notebook for that to do on-site work. I want to effectively burn the photo's to CD/DVD without hassles. I find the Roxio to be a pain to use.

That's the point though......Nero is ONE program that does it all rather than having to use several (which most consumers couldn't be bothered with).

Maximum PC has an article on which one is better... they came out with the same score.

Another vote for "they're both f***ing awful". They've long since stopped being disc burning applications and morphed into bloated, half-baked, inferior "multimedia suites". I won't go near either (and in the case of Nero, how the mighty have fallen).

There is various basic disc-burning functionality built into Windows Vista: you can burn audio CDs in Windows Media Player, video DVDs in Windows DVD Maker or Windows Photo Gallery, data discs in Windows Explorer and other base applications. You may well find that one of these tools is all you need. If not, thre are a number of excellent, lean and efficient burning tools for specific purposes available on the net. (For my own needs, Vista's native tools plus ImgBurn serve me well.)

I have the Roxio EMC10. The main reason I got it was to integrate all those multimedia programs. Instead of opening several lone programs I would just use one. Of course I still have those specific programs as backups. Nero didn't work for me when Vista came out and that's why I stuck with Roxio.

I didn't think I needed all the extra ****e that Nero comes with but use them more and more since getting it. Nero Recode for ripping films, Nero Showtime for watching media.

Still loads of stuff in Nero 8.0 that I dont use though :)

I think Ashampoo Burning Studio 7 is the best solution, it's simple, easy and without extra stuff's!

If you already use Roxio or Nero, you'll find InfraRecorder easier to jump straight into than ImgBurn. I think you'll also have greater directory control using the tree views for what you say you want to achieve.

Download both ImgBurn and InfraRecorder and see for yourself. Since they're both free... you haven't anything to lose.

Since I do have the NERO CD on hand, I think I'll do the custom load where you load only what you want to use and try that out.
