If you go into the Bios of your laptop, you will find that their are settings for the optical drive.

To get into the Bios, shut your computer off, and then as it is starting press F2 or the ddelete key, and the Bios will load.

The settings you are looking for are in the advanced or optical drive tab.

    I think the options are:
    high performance and silent.
Just select the silent one, and the cd drive will spin slower, so that it is not as audible.

    I hope this helps.

Isn't it one of those slot-loading optical drives? I think they are inherently noisier than tray-loaders because of the mechanism to suck in and spit out the disk. It is more complex than an opening drawer.

It is only loud when i eject or insert a cd/dvd, but when I am watching a dvd it is fine. It runs smooth but when i eject the cd/dvd it sounds like metal is being crushed or something. And yes it is a slot-loading optical drives that come standard with all the dell xps m1530s. Thanks.

I have two slot loading blu-ray drives and they make an awesome noise when a disk is inserted. Their is basically a small wall which moves out of the way and a bunch of other things move, and it sounds awesome to me, but I can guess that it is annoying to others.
John is right, slot load drives are usually much more expensive because of their more intricate design, but they do have their positives.

not sure how loud you guys are talking about... but the slot-load drive on the ps3 seems fine.

It's only applied to Harddrive, not CD/DVD drive.
