Most times I move my 1530, it sounds like the hard drive is grinding against its own case. Is this harmless or could it be causing damage? My laptop is brand new.

what do you mean "move my 1530"? moving it around the house while it is turned on? or moving it like, ofc to house in a back pack or something? Does the sound only comes when you move it or even when its resting on one place? What HDD do you have? it might cause you problems in the long run, coz in normal circumstances there should not be any noticeable grinding sound on it.. are you hearing it eventhough you are not putting your face beside the laptop? advise you to call dell since its brand new anyway and have them dispatch someone to check it out...

If you hear a loud 'click' when you move it, that's normal - the hard drive is just parking the heads.

If you hear the sound of something spinning rubbing against something not spinning, that is most likely not a good sound, however fans will occasionally make noise if you move the computer while they're spinning.

If the hard drive were truly grinding, I think it would fail rather quickly.
