I've asked one of the dell's sellers about the noise from the optical and hard drive. He told me they have fixed this problem and now they are shipping them without this problem. Does anyone know anything about that? Did they really eliminate the problem?

Mine was delivered about two weeks ago. I didn't hear any optical drive noise but the hard drive was noisy as heck.

Haha, mine was delivered 5/02... No HDD noise, at least not anything constant or more than a very occasional small tick.... but I had the Optiarc DVDRW drive... which a tech is coming to replace in the next couple days. It's noisy... however I believe they are now shipping them without those...

Nope, I just received my replacement and it has an Optiarc drive, but this one is somewhat quieter though. I don't mind optical drive noise anyway, it's only occasional and it sounds cool :D.

If they "eliminated" the problem, I want them to "eliminate" the noise that my M1530 makes, cause it is just killer when I am in class and quiet environments.

I just got my M1530 today, SP1 Installed and it purrs like a mute kitten.

The Optieorc drive or whatever make a loud SNAP BANG POW KABLAAM! when loading and unloading, but it runs silent. Everything is perfect :-D

Yeah my HD is perfectly silent, Optiarc drive.... ehhh not silent at all. Sounds like something is dying everytime you startup, stick a disc in, eject a disk.

Yeah, mine too. It doesn't bother me, but I think it'd be cool if dell had programmed some "SNAP BANG POW KABLAAM!" pop up graphics for when you load a DVD. Old guys who remember the old Batman television show will know what I mean.

    That would be sad...

I think it would be funnier if someone had a Pentium2, stuck Crysis in their computer and it pops up an error message saying "lol"

My optical drive gives me a scary crunchy (as in the Cookie Monster eating cookies) noise. It only happens when I first put a cd/dvd in the slot. Reading from the drive is quiet.

My 7200 rpm 250 gb samsung HDD is making significantly more noise than my old laptop. Just the constant humming..It doesn't make any more noise when i'm doing harddrive related stuff =/ Idk if I should get it replaced or w/e. I'm not sure if this is normal or not.

My 250gb 7200rpm hdd is quite. My Optiarc makes noise when a disk is put in, but after that is isn't bad.

It makes a lot of noise when you put a disk in. Sounds like a lawn mower running over your disk...

the 250gb 7200rpm was sort of noisy when i got the m1530. Called Dell and they sent me a replacement HDD. the replacement is much better. I barely feel the harddrive spinning and the noise coming from it is much bearable compared to the one i got earlier.

Ditto on the optical drive. Provided that I don't use it much, it's still pretty annoying as it's loud as hell when the computer starts up.

By the way would I void the warranty if I just request for a replacement and change it myself or a technician would be a better choice?

The 250GB 7200 Samsung in my 1530 is dead silent. Not a hum or peep out of this thing. Extremely pleased. The TEAC DVD is also very silent, other then some normal loading and eject noises (but no "SNAP BANG POW KABLAAM!") :)

Unfortunately you can never request specific parts. Its the luck of the draw. You can always get a replacement like I did. I got the Optiarc initially, got a brand new replacement with TEAC. Score!

How can you tell what kind of optical drive is in the machine?
edit: I used device manager and yes I have the optiarc. Is there anything bad about it besides noise levels? arent cd drives going to be noisy just b/c of their nature anyway? :p

Yes, slot drives do make more noise. There is nothing bad about it aside from the noise levels.

I currently have an Optiarc in one and Teac in the other. The Teac does make noise, but the sounds are shorter and silenter than the Optiarc. It doesnt make you feel like a cat is dying everytime you stick in or eject a CD.
