How much would my XPS m1530 be in one years time?
    Its the newest release with:

    Intel T9300 2.5ghz
    3gb ram
    320gb 5400rpm
    1440x900 LG
    8600m GT DDR3
    Midnight Blue

I would just like to know as maybe in a years time i might get a MBP because i will have enough money for one.

So, how much do you think it will be worth in one years time?

In a years time, things will have moved along a long way. Your high-specification machine will be toward the bottom of the range, possibly touching the middle of it.

Price up a brand-new machine now, using what was top-of-the-line components from a year ago. The price difference(ignoring any rebates or special offers) is what you should expect to pay below the current cost of your machine, if you were to buy in 12 months time.

    An example:

    TOTL machine - $1700
TOTL last year, but typical spec today - $1000

If you're after second-hand values, then I'd reduce the outcome by 50-25%, depending on how values fare nearer the time.

In a years time, you would expect to pay ~$1000 for the brand-new equivalent of your $1700 machine. Your machine, now being 12 months old and no longer top-of-the-range, would be worth $500 to $750 second-hand, assuming it was in GWO with no nasty marks or faults.

ETA - blind figures, from the top of my head. No idea what you've paid, but should give an idea of how to calculate it for yourself.

Those specs are pretty good corujo712, but as others have said, I'm afraid it wont be worth a whole lot in a years time. With technology progressing so fast, it will quickly become outdated and you wont get too much for it. :(

I'd guess you would get about 50% of what it is worth today. Depends on the demand in a year too.

Half of what you paid for it. No joke. Just buy the darn thing to keep, not for resale.

If it matters I had my Toshiba Satelite for 4 years, I paid roughly $1400 for it back in 2003 and just sold it for $300, but it had a cracked screen. I hope with the 3 year service deal I have on my m1530 that I will be able to use it for at least 3-4 years before I need to upgrade again. This is my first Dell product and I hope it holds up as well as my Toshiba did. Everyone knows that laptops are like cars and they depreciate the minute you take delivery. Look at it that way if you paid $20000 for a new car today how much would it be worth in 1-4 years.

The only notebooks that seem to keep their value are the Thinkpads.

I want to sell my XPS in one year and get a MBP. My XPS also has warranty for 3 years with accidental cover.

Is USD $1000 to much to ask for in a years time with nehalem processors coming out later this year? (cause thats how much i am hoping to get)

As much as I hate to say it, laptops in 1 year will have fast dual core cpu's(with quad core CPU's entering the market), RAID, DDR3 Memory and 9 series GPU's.

But that's when Santa Rosa was just released. Besides, the M1530 revived it.
