Hi, I received my new XPS m1530 last friday. first thing I noiced when I turned on the laptop was how the bottom part of the monitor looks brigther than the top. I put on a black wallpaper and the botton part of the screen looks gray instead of black. It's really annonying and I do not think this is normal.
I do a lot of graphic design so I cannot live with that diference of color in the screen, I need a monitor that displays perfect picture and colors.
What do you think ? Should I return my laptop and ask for a new one or this is completely normal. ???
Thanks for your advice, I'll try to post some pics later tonight.

Another victim of backlight bleeding.
-
Its called back light bleed. Its fairly common on laptops. You can have it replaced...but the new one may not be any better.
-
I think it shouldnt be common for $1500 laptops.
-
no one should use a laptop's lcd for extreme precision editing. anyone truly in the business should know that you have to use external monitors for this. -
I wonder how bad it really is. When I first heard about this sort of thing, I quickly went and checked my notebook. Lo and behold, I had the dreaded back light bleed. When I watched a move in a really dark seen, it looked lighter than black at the bottom. If you pause it on a really black scene it really, really shows up. So often I am pausing a really black scene in a movie and at the same time wishing to stare at it. I've personally decided it's not an issue for me. But I don't know, maybe some situations are worse than others.

seriously, that's pretty normal. Try adjusting the gamma a little bit in your display settings and look at real pictures, not blackness. If you can't find an adjusted setting that looks the way you need it, yeah, return it and get the top end Sony, the have the bestest most accurate screens that I've seen. You might investigate a Mac, too. I hear there screens are top notch, but I don't know for myself.

I dont think so. I showed dell pictures of my screen (just as bad) and they are going to replace it. I think dell doesnt replace "normal" screens
-
I think not! -
Difficult to tell from the pics, but it looks similar to the level of bleed I get from my CPT141 screen.
Way too much to be acceptable, renders the machine useless for anything more than desktop work.
Some backlight bleed is normal (though only due to cost reduction in manufacturing), but not enough to affect over half the screen and wash out colours. -
So I should have it replace ?
I understand that most laptop can have backlight bleeding but not that much. I draw a red strip in MS Paint and the bottom of the strip is pink and the top a perfect red.
I'll give a call to Dell later today or monday to see what are my options. -
Yes you should have it replaced.
-
I showed the picture to a friend of mine who works for Dell in Ottawa. He told me that this is not normal at all and to send the laptop back... I'm going to montreal in 2 weeks and I will need my laptop there so I'll send it when i'll come back from my little trip. I'll keep you update.

These crappy screens are probably the reason why I'm going to purchase a macbook pro as my next computer.
That, and the fact that they don't offer matte screens in the higher resolutions. My friend's Macbook pro has 1440x900 LED backlit matte screen, it's absolutely amazing.
I'd be all over a m1530 if they offered decent screens. -

I just realized I had the same problem. I too have the CPT141 screen. Mine is there, and it worsens when i change the angle of the screen. Urrghh. I am really frustrated with this notebook. Do you guys think I could still return it after 30 days of 'receipt' and not 30 days after date of purchase? I may still have enough time to decide whether to return this notebook and buy a macbook pro (if they introduce a new line on jan 15 @ macworld).

How do you know which screen you have ?
-
How do i make my screen blank like that so i can check?
-
I made a preview of the Blank screensaver hehe, maybe there is an easier way
-
My Asus W2V isn't like that at all. No bleeding on my screen that I can detect... AT ALL!
-
Just did it on my 1720...yea its nothing like yours, i mean when I bend it backwards like you did, i see fine on the whole screen.
I mean, the bottom of mine is a bit brighter, but nothing huge. -
Goto MS Paint make a giant black square and set it as wallpaper.
Or
Screen saver options and set the black picture you made as your screen saver. -
Just checked my screen part number.... LPL0301 Which is supposed to be LG?

I cal Dell yesterday and talked to a women. They will send me a box to send my laptop back. It should take about a week to receive it back
