Hey guys!
i just wanted to know how high the temperatures on the m1530 can go until the computer shuts down ( for CPU, GPU, and ACPI )
I ask this because my lappy will suddenly restart after some stressing while OCing my GPU to 625 core, 890 mem. (no i dont want you posting that its my fault, that im an idiot, that i shouldnt OC this lappy and such)
Its usually stable when gaming (ie. Team Fortress 2), stays at 72C CPU and 81C GPU OCd, but when i try a heavier game ( EVE Online) it will restart after about 20-30 minutes of use.
Any info will be greatly appreciated![]()

max of cpu = 100
max of gpu = 125
Though those are absolute max'es (as in if your card hits that or above for certain time =burn out)
As far as I know, it should shut down well before it hits those temps, probably a 10-15% margin below max, that it will actually shut down at.
Not sure about the acpi. -
-
hmm, then i dont think its the temperatures causing the shutdown, maybe the OC renders my gfx card unstable...

Yeah if it was the graphics card merely freezing up and artifacting, then it would do just that - Freeze up and atifact.
That would be a direct result of running the card faster than it can handle, but in that case the laptop wouldn't shut down, it would just crash.
The shutting down issue is due to something else. -
"The shutting down issue is due to something else."
ahhh well, i would LOOOOOOOOVE to know why... hehehe
I will call dell tomorrow and see what they can resolve me, but this is very strange since ive used this lappy to play quake 4, grid and some more intensive apps (all at full res and settings)..., so i dunno what could it be, my only guess goes for gpu or motherboard, in my case ive overclocked my 8600m gt to about some safe temps, not that much of an improvement (517 mhz and other values) and all fine, not even one shutdown, (ive now uninstalled rivatuner for the overclocking and i hv normal values now) all was ok until now, when i installed fear 2 demo and played at medium setts (altough it variates when it does it and when it doesnt), so i dunno, ive read some posts related to the cpu failing (T5750 in my case, cuz of the temps) or also a glitch around the switch that controls the battery and ac adapter (it kinda stops recieving the necessary energy...) so i can only guess by now... -
Guess what guys, turns out that the AC adapter (the 3 pin socket) was not plugged in all the way correctly and this seems to cause the system to shutdown itself, even if battery is fully charged, (dell support told me this) so, i guess its a problem solved for me, no overheating now
-
lol im glad vlank! haaha the 3 pin socket!!?? you gotta be kidding me, it was simple.... but im no longer getting those random shutdowns anyway....
Cheers! -

What did you do exactly KOER to stop the shutting down issue?, i got it stopped for a while but it seems its not resolved at all..., ive now overclocked my card but i will try to keep it under low temps (gpu 78° max. and 75° cpu), and see what happens..., what bothered me REALLY BAD is that all temps seem "normal" but the ACPI temp is at 90-95 when it shutsdown (using hw monitor), thats the hottest part of my lappy, so im concerned about it, i could really try to change the MOBO at dell´s, cuz it seems this is the most worked part whenever i run fear 2 demo at max settings...
what do u ppl think, any ideas? -
i get the same problem without overclocking at all, ive had it happen 3 times while painting my car in trackmania united, so i just tried that powerbar thing and im gona test it out again.
the 3 pin part, are you talking about the part that goes into the wall, or the part that connects to the powerbrick? -
I am also experiencing random shut down's when I'm playing any graphically intensive games. Got the laptop for christmas, and its been working great. But for the last week its been having this problem.
Can you be more specific about how your fixed it, what was the problem with the AC adaptor? -
had the same problem, after about half an hour of playing crysis, a blue screen appeared and the notebook shut down, I monitored the temps and they were a bit over 80°C. Total system reinstall and anything else did not help. They even replaced the whole motherboard with the graphic chip but it didnt help. What did help to lower the temps was cleaning the cooling vent, a lot of dust gets stuck there, now the temps are 10°C lower and the notebook doesnt shut down
-
That is your CHIPSET temp. Not good - that is way high. -
i get my FPS to go down after couple of mins on that temp, its pretty obvious why..., but anyway ppl, i have researched EVERY FORUM, and i think here is the answer to this issue:
-sometimes this problem stops after changing the MOBO, but the certain change is the MOBO + HEATSINK PART + CPU, thats the unbeatable combo, where u can assure the problem is solved, DELL is changing those anytime this week, ill tell ya how it goes... -
Since i got my mobo replaced i have not had this problem, even with my GPU temps reaching 91C, no restarts, so it is kind of a motherboard fault there, you can tell dell your computer is suddenly restarting out of nowhere, and hopefully that will mean you get a mobo replacement.
but ONLY do this if its completely necessary, you mobo might be faulty, but at least it keeps temperatures down, my original mobo maxed at 80C, witch was great, but this one maxes at 86C.... so the restart problem has been fixed, but im getting higher temperatures now.... sigh*.. -
I've helped some guys tracing down those restarts on M1530 notebooks.
However it's important to recognize that there are multiple possible reasons for shutdowns. One has already been mentioned which is excessive heat, which can't be controled by active (fan) and passive (throttle) cooling of components by the BIOS. If the heat reaches certain thresholds the notebook will shutdown or restart immediately. It's an emergency brake. You said your issues are not temperature related.
If there are multiple possible reasons for shutdowns, this may mean the following doesn't apply to you. But it helped some M1530 users to get rid of their shutdowns.
Anyway: Sometimes the VRM regulation doesn't work reliable. It's occurs often in highly GPU overclocked systems and systems which use CPU undervolting. The reason why undervolting comes into the game is that you run your CPU on a low voltage level were it's very important that voltage levels work reliable otherwise your CPU will crash. It helped in those cases to disable Speedstep or use RMClock / Management / P-states transitions method / Perfom single-step transitions only.
This also explains why exchanging the motherboard helps: The entire VRM phases are exchanged.
In general it's not a fault since you operate your motherboard outside its designed specifications. If you max out you GPU and/or undervolt the CPU to the lowest possible VID, you have reduced any tolerance that has been designed into the operation of the motherboard to zero. Without tolerance a load shift is sufficient to change voltages which might crash components running at their limit (whether this may be highly overclocked or highly undervolted). -
Well guys, i have a big update for ya, i had this problem as well only with a T5750 C2DUO PROC., DELL just changed my MOBO for the second time (graphics card also), heatsink, thermal paste, processor, and the problem seemed to be delayed pretty much, i happens rarely now (even with OC), the only graphical game i cant play (again, with oc) is an online MMORPG game called "sherwood" (google it and try it with an xps m1530 with a good OC and tell me if ur system shuts down...) other applications such as FEAR 2 (at max settings) with OC (690 core clock - 900 memory) i get pretty good fps and i dont get more than 84° tops on temps (on mobo, on cpu 78°, gpu 80°), and the system doesnt shut down that fast, i can get like 40 to 1 hr playing and it doesnt happend sometimes, so im kinda lost here again, number 1: i will try to do a FULL windows update to see if this resolves anything, number 2: my system is optimized with tweak values and this could be messing up things a little bit too, i will try it later this afternoon, number 3: TEMPS dont seem to be causing the shutdown prob. for my experience, i will try DELL to change my memories (1 x 2 gb) to see if this makes a diff., number 4: hard drive is also an option for me, but its pretty much the last one...
If anyone has an update i and plenty of ppl with this issue will be deeply grateful, ill keep an update for my tentative solutions.
(OHH, and ive tried to do experiments with OC, without, with UNDERVOLT, without, and it seems to happend as well at the end, now i can say i have a bigger range of doing stuff, OC, use very intensive apps, etc, but the prob is still there, even before the hardware changes) -
Im with KOER, this is due to something else, a hardware prob, altought by now i should have received a "non faultly" MOBO since this has been changed 2 times by now... i had the feeling the processor was causing this but, im thinking the solution is on another direction... what u guys think? -
Anyone??
KOER, please confirm us if your problem is COMPLETLY gone, even if u do OC, and pls do one try, go and try to play this game (if you dont have OC, give it a try with it) ( http://www.maidmarian.com/Sherwood.htm), and tell me if ur system shuts down, if it doesnt then it implies ur problem is COMPLETLY GONE, my XPS lappy even with MOBO processor and heatsink changes still does it (With OC, even if i do 590 core clock and 790 memory clock)
Thx in advance. -
ok guys, let me post out some tests ive been running.
first, since my last mobo replacement i have had ZERO shutdowns, OC or no OC, Zero, Zip, Nada...
My overclocks have been an excessive 700 CORE, 900 mem, and what do you think? No problem at all, my computer is running great, this is an OC with Rivatuner, and ive tried with different video drivers and none of them will cause my computer to restart like it did before i got the MOBO replacement.
I honestly dont have any idea on what could be causing this, probably ( as stated above ) the system detects variations in voltages and power flow and shuts down... but this is still considered by dell as a fault, so if it annoys you too much you can always get your mobo replaced like i did.
sorry if i cant help out more, but since i no longer have the problem ive made little effort to find out what was actually happening.. -
I really thank you Koer, uve given me one (maybe the only) point right to fix this annoying problem with this xps lappies, i can second this opinion since dell has changed the MOBO like 2 times by now (3 faultly ones), processor one time, thermal paste, pads and heatsink, almost all my xps system changed, and guess what, problem still ocurrs, so, the only way seems to have ur MOBO changed and pray for it to be a "good" one, ive experienced this problem with all 3 MOBOS even without OC, so imagine my desperation...
Anyway, ive informed dell tech guy that is following my case all this and soon another tech guy from my city is visiting me (again, and for the third time) to change my mobo/gpu unit, and i will test it ASAP, as i said, this game called "sherwood" does the shutting down faster than any other game or program (with OC), so i guess this game is the ultimate test that ur prob. is completly fixed (again, run this game WITH OC, lets say 600 core & 800 memory, with rivatuner), doesnt matter if its an OC of 520 core, it shuts down fast..
Thx really Koer, im glad someone at least solved this prob., ive heard only 2 ppl around posts on different sites that have solved it, cheers bro!
