Does anyone know if it is possible to use the XPS 1530 as a desktop machine with the lid closed. ie with keyboard, mouse and external display connected. I can do this with my macbook pro but am yet to find a method to do this with the XPS? Any thoughts?

You just need to set it to do nothing when you close the lid. Right now it probably goes into sleep mode. This is managed in your power settings.
