new to the boards here and first thread post! Woot!!
just got into the shopping market for laptops. decided on getting a xps 1530 in like a day!
Now Im in the process of customizing it, hardest part surprisingly cause of trying to balance having cash in my pocket and getting a satisfying laptop.
so how noticable are the visual disctinction between the resolutions; 1280 vs 1440 vs 1680. I originally didnt think it would be that much, but started changing my mind after reading several reviews that trashed 1280 screens.
And what about computer performance? I dont think I'll trade slowing performance fo mild upgrades in image quality.
What about battery life?
Anyone who got the 1280 screen and love it or 1440/1680 screen that regret getting it?
Will definately appreciate any help!

If you plan on watching a movie / playing games then I would definitely recommend the 1280x800 screen resolution since you cannot view movies higher than 720p anyways and you won't be able to game comfortably (stable FPS) beyond 1280x800 with the upcoming titles. If for some reason though you like viewing smaller icons and / or being able to type more on the page with Microsoft Office, then I would recommend getting the higher resolution screen. Save the money!

I havent ordered my 1530 yet but i do have an inspiron with 15.4" screen
I checked the resolution and its running at 1680x1050 and looks perfect
I just put it into the 1280x800 res and it looks horrible
I guess the larger res things do look smaller but they look alot crisper.
I will be ordering mine with the higher res screen
Hope this helps -
i have the lowest resolution for the m1530 and its great. u can go for the higher one but remember u wont be able to play most games on the native resolution and lowering it makes the screen blurry

There aren't huge differences between displays. You stand an equal chance of getting a poorly made WXGA screen as you do a poorly made WSXGA+ screen. According to sources on this forum, LG makes the best displays at any of the three resolutions.
Performance with the large screen is reduced when playing games at high resolutions. It makes the graphics card work a bit harder to render everything smoothly.
Battery life will suffer a very small amount with high resolution displays.
I've worked on high resolution external monitors, and the extra screen space is very useful, so that's what I went with for my 1530. -
I'd go with 1440 whatever you're doing.
The gaming issue isn't too bad, it's not a big difference from 1280 to 1440 and you can OC the GPU without any problems to 6k 3dmark if you notice any problems.
For me 1280 is the resolution for a 13.3 screen and 1440 for a 15.4. I had a 13.3 laptop before and i wouldn't like the idea that my new xps1530 would have the same resolution as that one.
For those who need higher resolutions they could chose the next one or on some other laptops even WUXGA (which i think is kinda silly on a 15.4 screen, but if you like it)
And then if you really really want to use 1280 for gaming you could even do that - changing a 1440 screen to 1280 is not too bad.
IMHO a 15.4 inch 1280 screen has a lower resolution than it should have. But that's just my opinion -
Anyone know if screen resolution is a factor when it comes to photo or video editing?
-
If you get to edit a large video/photo you may pray for a larger resolution (on a lower resolution you just see less of the photo at one moment).

This will help you a great deal.

Remember, screen quality has nothing to do with resolution. It has to do with Dell being inconsistent with their screens. You know, the graininess issues and whatnot.
If you're gaming, it's good to get 1280 because you can play most games at native resolution. And playing at native res looks really good. It's also good if you have poor eyesight, as everything from text to pictures will appear larger.
If you're into photo editing, or you want to multi-task and fit multiple windows in one screen, or maybe you're just doing something that requires a lot of screen estate, then get 1680. You can still play games, but you'll have to set your resolution to a lower one, as the 8600M GT can struggle at such a high resolution. Gaming at non-native res isn't so bad. Do note that text will look smaller.
In the end, resolution comes down to personal preference. I'd recommend getting to see both resolutions first hand, and then see which one fits you. -
I got the 1440 and I love it, it looks amazing and I can still play counter strike source on max settings and it works fine.
