if there is going to be a refresh, how soon do you think it would be? I need a new laptop soon, but I'd hate to buy one and then have the entire line refreshed. I'm just curious what your best guesses are (and how long since the last update).

Best guess, late November.
-
why not buy a used xps and sell it when the new line is out?
-
i think dell gonna drop the entire xps lineup.
dell has stopped making quality products in their consumer division.
as their focus is in retail channel now, and retail=low specs. -
you are correct nomoredell, and they specifically arent making the xps line of laptops anymore, its been integrated into the inspiron and studio lines of lower quality laptops.

I work in the IT department here.
This is what I notice about Dell's business practice.
1) The quality and service is in the Business line. ( not so expensive.)
2) The 'prettiness and fast, new parts' is in the end user line. ( costly. )
3) example, many USB ports and full implementation of communications in Business line. Whereas, in the end user line these are minimized out in favor of the 'new' things, like fastest CPU, latest Video, etc.
Fact: The end user lines are born and die, over and over. This is where Dell's experiments are done too.
The needed information comes in from the experiment of the XPS line over a few years and then they implement what they've learned in new, quality products and arrangements for the business class.
Fact: You only 'think' the business class is inferior because of...
less than 3 GB RAM; slow, older CPU; heavier laptop, etc.
Fact: The business class is designed to work day in and day out.
The end user line (XPS), falls apart from daily use, such as traveling regularly and dealing with customers, plugging into different physical situations.
Broaden you view port and see what is going on.
If you are playing with an end user line of laptops, you can not expect much in quality service, wisdom and a long lasting toy.
The people on this blog that recommend buying used laptops and selling them regularly have their finger on the pulse. Buy used and upgrade the memory and CPU, hard drive. It's easy.
Two USB ports is a bummer.
I think I've made my point.

wait what? What point? are you sure you quoted the right person, i didnt even say anything about business class Dell laptops lol i was just stating a point that they are cutting the xps line lol
-
and noremoredell was talking about how they arent focusing as much on direct from dell sales as they are putting more and more premade laptops into retailers and selling them, i dont thiink he was making a comparison to business class laptops either, you may have just misunderstood what he was talking about or idk cause no one was making any points about that as far as i could tell.
-
i assume you mean the latitudes and precision laptops but no one here is even talking about them or comparing them to the non business laptops like the inspiron, studio, or xps laptops.
