I have a new XPS-15 laptop (i5-2410, 6GB, Intel Wireless 1030 w/bluetooth). I have a D-Link DIR-655 router. When I go to the router's wireless status page, the laptop shows just 1 Mbps speed (connected using 802.11n (2.4Ghz). It's sitting right next to the router and shows 100% signal strength. A couple other wireless devices in the house (a wifi printer and a roku) show 802.11n connections with 12% at 11Mbps and 38% at 78Mbps. I even have an old 802.11g based system and it shows great speeds too! When I try to stream a movie to the laptop it can't keep up at all (stutters and freezes). All other devices in the home work fine.

If I make some configuration change to the wireless connection on the laptop that causes the connection to be reset, the router page will show the laptop connection at around 150Mbps! But within a few moments of use the speed just drops right back down to 1Mbps and stays there. Even browsing from the laptop is noticeably slow compared to the desktop!

I opened the back panel and the two antenna wires looked like they were connected fine to the wireless card. Any ideas on what I can try? Everything (router and laptop) are at pretty much defaults as far as network stuff goes. And I did already try unplugging all the other wireless stuff (phones, etc) and that didn't make any difference. And since my nearest neighbor is about 1000' away i don't think it's interference.

Thanks... I really need some help.

try reinstalling some of the network drivers. Check all settings on the router that its not limiting the connection.

Just wonder... did you run it on battery? Based on the XPS 15 lounge, running it on battery decrease the performance of the wireless card...

    just my $0.02

Last night I had downloaded a little tool to actually test the wifi speed (by copying a temp. file from the laptop to a file share on my home network. It was reporting 35Mbps writing and 15Mbps reading. I thought that seemed strange since the router's status page always was showing 1Mbps. So I checked the router status page and it was up at 117Mbps! And it stayed there all evening! Navigating the router's management pages was snappy too (it's usually painfully slow from the laptop and even timing out sometimes). I even streamed a movie and watched about 10 minutes with no problems. I put the computer to sleep for the night and it was still up high this morning. Plus clicking around in the router management pages it was still snappy. Even did a Skype video call and all was working great. Then bang, router status dropped to 1Mbps and clicking around the router management pages became slow again. I'm still getting about the same speed when using the actual file transfer test. But movie streaming is lousy again. I'm starting to wonder if it isn't the router (I have the latest firmware). It's only about a year old but who knows. I do have it sitting next to some other electronics. Maybe there is some problem with that. I'll sure be glad to figure this out. I have tried plugged in and on battery and it doesn't seem to make any difference and my power setting is "Power Saver".
Thanks for your ideas so far everyone.

Change the power setting to Maximum Performance, if it does make difference
Power Saver, even when plugged in, may cause degradation to most performance, and I think laptop in balanced mode is quite good already. But this may not work, because some other interference may occur (like bluetooth?, they use 2.4 ghz too)
