I have the Haswell version of the xps12. Instead of shutting down at night I usually just close the lid. I got up this morning and the device was very hot on the bottom. The device was on and stuck on a black screen. I had to use the switch to turn it off. After letting it cool I booted but couldn't find any info in the event log other than the device wasn't shutdown properly. Anybody have any advice for this?

I have the XPS 12 also (9Q33). Never had such issues. I regularly take a can of compressed air, open the bottom panel and blow in the fan and between the screen and keyboard. The laptop never gets hot, I hear the fan speed up occasionally but it's more when i'm doing CPU intensive tasks like video encoding. Maybe it's an obvious observation, but are your drivers and bios up to date?

I suggest checking close to the P L and O keys where the CPU is, it that area get hot, maybe repasting the CPU with some good thermal paste could be a solution.
