I’m having a problem with screen resolution when I connect my Dell XPS15 to a projector. The projector is an NEC LT245 which is capable of resolution up to 1600x1200. It’s mounted on the ceiling of a conference room where I do presentations so it’s difficult to get to the controls.

In addition to my XPS15 I also have an old Dell Latitude D610 which I have been using for the presentations for several years. I run the D610 at 1400x1050 and everything looks good on the D610’s screen and the projector screen. (Both PCs are running Windows 7.)

My XPS15 is usually set for 1920x1080 but when I connect it to the projector the resolution is automatically knocked down to 1024x768 which looks bad on both the projector screen and the XPS15’s screen. There is no apparent way to manually increase the resolution when connected to the projector. 1024x768 I the highest option on the screen resolution menu in Win7 when connected to the projector.

I understand why the resolution is being knocked down from the usual 1920x1080: the projector can’t handle that resolution. But it can handle a lot more than 1024x768.

Question #1: why is the resolution being knocked down so far to 1024x768?

Question #2: what can I do to get my XPS15 to run at a higher resolution when connected to the projector?

    Thanks!
    Peter

Of course, the resolution is being knocked down due to probably 1 things:
    1. You use clone setting, which clone anything on your screen, thus require lowering the resolution, as the projector is not capable to accept that resolution

What you probably can do is:
1.Change resolution to it's nearest supported resolution, like 1600x900 or 1366x768
    2. Use extended mode, allows you to set resolution on each monitor

You can set it on windows 7 by right clicking desktop-->Screen Resolution
Choose extend these display in multiple display option, and then click on different monitor to set different resolution

Warning: extending display means you got wider monitor option, not duplicating monitor...
