Hi, I guess I have landed on purchasing an XPS15 tomorrow.

As much as I want to take advantage of their sale (as you get 6gb ram, bluray drive, and other stuff for about $1,380) I can only afford up to $1,150 pretax.

I'm buying tomorrow so I really need a solid opinion.

I've customized the laptop, cutting costs where I can, without sacrificing the big things.

    i7-740QM
    2GB GeForce 435
    4GB Shared DDR3 (Upgradeable later)
I think 500GB 7200rpm HDD (or whatever was their cheapest option)
    1080p res
    Backlit keyboard
    Bluetooth
    and downgraded warranty, etc.

Problem is I'm just a little over budget. I come in at $1,265ish pretax.

My question is, which is the correct downgrade? The GFX? 2gb 435 > 1gb 420? Or the 1080p > 720p? I heard 1080p is a must.. at the same time, I want the quad core 740QM. WHAT DO I DO?

    Thanks in advance!

You may not need to give up anything - the Alienware forum has a guide to buying Dell/Alienware and if you read it, you may be able to get extra discount calling a sales rep directly.

Remember the 740qm will be beaten easily by the base sandy bridge quads when they come back, that may help getting the sell (they've gotta sell their stock somehow).

Perhaps the 1080p > 720p, since it would be less demanding on the graphics card?

Ok I'll look for it. Thanks for the idea! Don't understand the last part about the 740qm

If you have to downgrade something, not the display.
Maybe the graphics card if you have to, but keep 1080p. It's far superior, and won't make your laptop feel like a $399 budget computer from Staples like 720p will.
