Hi Guys,
I have just received my XPS15 (L502x).
full spec ... but the thing is kinda heavy !. Feels almost as big as my previous 17" Sony.
any way...
I am about to zapp the HDD and do a fresh windows 7 re-install. Once done I will need to apply all windows update either by
1) Applying windows 7 service pack 1 + other updates from MS website?
or
2) apply all updates from MS website instead of using sp1 package?
Which of the two update methods is best?
cheers

Get the media that has SP1 integrated and do a fresh install from that.

What I did, worked like a charm. -
But there's really nothing wrong with applying updates after the fact. I would download the stand-alone Service Pack 1 installer and keep it around for the future. Install that, then any patches on top of it.
However be aware that it is possible you might need an initial update before Service Pack 1 can be installed. The way to tell is if Windows Update doesn't even show SP1 as an option. The KB for this is 976902 if you need it. -

On a clean install, it will save you alot of time to install sp1 first. Then apply the Critical updates of Windows Update.
As long you have drivers that has no dependency on pre sp1, it is ok to install them after the sp1 update. Saves even more time.
Or use a SP1 integrated W7 disk. -

I used a program called windows 7 lite and this site contains the steps
Slipstream Windows 7 SP1 into a Installation DVD or ISO File - Windows 7 Forums -
You cannot use a slipstream Windows 7 installation disc to do a repair install with on a currently installed Windows 7 SP1.
You cannot use a slipstream Windows 7 installation disc to do a repair install with on a currently installed slipstream Windows 7 SP1.
You can use a Windows 7 SP1 installation disc (ex: Technet (available), MSDN (available), or retail (when available)) to do a repair install with on a currently installed slipstream Windows 7 SP1.
That kind of makes the disk pretyy much useless if you cant use it to fix windows issues?
