Looking at the website above, it seems Dell have downgraded the machines specs and increases the price a few hundred pounds too. ???

The 1Gb ATI 4670 is only standard on the £1000 machine now, a month ago I could get it on one costing £799. Same with the 16" RGBLED screen.

The price of the Studio XPS hasn't changed much, what has changed is the level of discounts offered by Dell.

As xmas has approached, the number of SXPS16 models (evalue codes) on offer has also halved, and the prices have been going up.

Back in November, there were really good deals - I didn't have the cash then to buy, which was unfortunate :(

Now though, I wouldn't buy any laptop - Intel are releasing lots of new processors in January at CES (and ATI some new mobile DirectX11 graphics parts), and availability should be pretty much nearly instant as stock is already with some companies. So maybe it's a blessing in disguise - put off your purchase for a few weeks and wait for the much better new technology :)
