When I purchased my Dell it was on special ($1000 off) but sadly this meant my only option was a 256GB SSD or a 750GB 7200RPM HD the SSD cost hundreds so I choose the HD. I also got a three year warranty.
I was wondering if there is a way I could have a Patriot 32 (or 64) GB SSD installed without voiding my warranty. Possibly a Dell store or something? I live in Auckland BTW. I want this as my boot drive and to still have my 750GB as a secondary (Windows Boot/Hibernate is the only thing that annoys me- also $APPDATA$ but that is rarely bigger than 1-5GB).
Thanks for any advice in advance.

Installing a HDD will not void your warranty as long as you don't break anything in the process, HDD and RAM are considered CRU (Customer Replaceable Units). For obvious reasons Dell will not cover replaced part as it was not sourced by them.
I'd personally stick with Intel or Samsung for a reliable drive. Avoid anything OCZ or SandForce for that matter. -
Is it because they have high initial failure rates? because it seems to me if you get lucky and get a good one it'll work fine
Also, on a side note does the xps 15 support sata 3? -

Yes any Sandy Bridge laptop supports internal SATA 3. -
I bought a vertex 2 160gb because it was cheap and I was hoping they had resolved any initial problems they had. It was somewhat troublesome and would blue screen often after putting my laptop to sleep, and blue screen almost 100% if I hibernated. I figured it didn't bother me much because it was, simply put, cheap and I could live with it.
However, it just suddenly died on me one day without any warning at all. Worked fine in the morning, not recognized by BIOS by the night.... Now, I know this is just my personal anecdote but honestly, in hindsight I would definitely pay a bit more for the peace of mind and so that I wouldn't have to go through all this trouble.
Luckily for me, I have backed up my important work documents to a mechanical drive but the rest of my personal files are gone =(
I am running a crucial m4 now... bit pricier and I will still continue to religiously back up my data but at least sleeping and hibernating work now.
And to confirm: yes the main hdd port supports sata 3. I benchmarked my m4 and it had around 500MB/s sequential read.
By the way, I am going to RMA the drive so if anyone in Toronto wants to take the risk I can sell them a cheap 160gb vertex 2 =) -
