The L502 seems to be coming 1st February with following specs (according to LesDeLLiens.com - Le forum non-officiel sur DeLL they are correct most of the time!)
- SB Architecture
- new GPU options with optimus, meaning that it will be Nvidia 500 Series
- either 1Gb ---> probably 540M??
- or 2Gb ---> 555M????
- FHD stays, but now it will have optional 3D and/or touchscreen
- no optimus if 3D seems likely
- new optional chicklet keyboard
And it will be called XPS 15 R2!!
-
Wow great find. Already ordered myself the version out now =[
-
Additional info from Notebookcheck:
The XPS 17 will get a 555M (they tested a preproduction model!!), that means however that the XPS 15 will only get the 540M or the 550M.
The 555M is however pretty fast, it is comparable to a GF9800M GT!!! -
It always gratifying to see one's work being used here.
RedlanceEQ aka: Redlance on LesDelliens.
So you know, my source for that info was from here: Details of upcoming Dell XPS L502X - Dell News, Tips & Tricks -
L501 Order cancelled.
-
So if u wanted to use the sandy bridge's gpu, you need optimus?
Sad how the design of R1 stays for R2. -
yes, without optimus you can only use the dedicated GPU.
-
pardon my ignorance but your happy because it is comparable to a pregen notebook gfx card??
-
I'm happy because the 9800M GT was horrendously expensive and hot...the 555M is comparably cheap and should be usable in smaller frame notebooks. In 2008 it was extremely high-end, now its mid-range.
See it this way: Notebook anno 2008 with a GF9800M GT was a 5kg monster and cost about 2000€, an XPS17 with an 555M is still rather powerful but will cost 1200€ and weight just under 3kgs.
Notebook tech is not only faster faster faster, its smaller faster cheaper! -
+1
-
thanks alot this is great news.
I really want to know the price though.
How much do you think for the XPS 15 R std edition with 720p screen & no 3D with no upgrades ? I'm hoping for around $900.
Does anybody know which cpu they will use like maybe 2500 & 2600 ?
What is a chicklet keyboard by the way ?
thanks -
They will use the full range of SB CPUs...a chicklet keyboard is a keyboard like the one on Macs and Sonys.
-
February can't come soon enough!! SO glad I waited it out for SB
-
Are the chicklet keyboards preferred over the current keyboard on the XPS 15? It seems like more and more laptops are going this keyboard route.
-
Its a issue of personal taste...some people hate them passionately, some say they are the best thing since sliced bread.
-
If Dell makes the 2720QM option too expensive, like HP, it would suck. The 1080p option should also go back to being $130, instead of close to $200 now.
-
What do you think the prices will start out on the 15'' without any upgrades ?
-
If the XPS 15 is without 1080p, it is garbage. Spend the bit more bones and you won't regret it.
-
I was THIS close to getting a L501X. My college starts in mid-March so hopefully I'll be able to get the L502X before that.
-
My order for the L501x is still in production and I am tempted to just cancel and wait for the L502. However I was afforded a rare bargain with my current configuration for $830.
XPS 15 w/ 1080p
Intel I5 640m 2.53Ghz
Nvidia Geforce 420m 1Gb
4Gb ram
500GB HD 7200rpm
Backlit keyboard
Next day shipping - FREE!
If I wait for the L502 I definitely won't get be getting a discount like I did here. What do you guys think? -
Keep yours unless you really want SB. The real changes come to the quad-core CPUs, but dual core should have some gains in battery and integrated GPU performance. I have no idea how you got the 1080p screen for so cheap. Was it a warranty replacement?
-
No I actually got it for that cheap from a Dell EPP code that I had a month ago. Initially I ordered the XPS 15 w/ 720p with same specs minus backlit keyboard for $650. But the screen was so bad that I made a case of it to Dell and they approved a return and allowed me to apply the original discounts to my newly configured system w/ 1080p. Can't wait to see use the 1080p screen.
-
Personally, I would keep it since you got it so cheap. The only reason I didn't get the L501x is because I knew SB was around the corner, in addition to the new mobile GPus (even thought they're just rebrands).
-
Yeah I'm leaning on just keeping the L501x since its about $200 cheaper than what someone would pay if they configured it exactly the same way on the Dell main website. On the other hand, what do you mean that the new mobile GPUs are just rebrands?
-
The nvidia 500m series are the 95% the same of the 400m series except with higher clocks and maybe (MAYBE) run cooler. But for the most part the gains for the l502x lies in the new processor.
-
Yeah I am having mine come in today and I payed only $799 from the outlet with the discount and tax included.
The 1080P Screen
Backlit Keyboard
640GB Harddrive
4GB Ram
9 Cell
N6200
i5-560M
No Bluray
I don't feel like waiting till February and I spent so little for this model. THis is what happened when I bought my m1330 The next day literally the price went down and the newer model came out. -
This news would normally make me upset but seeing as I got my XPS 15 with 6GB DDR3, and the 1080p screen for $600 NIB im ok with it =]
-
Great prices, how are you guys pulling that off?
-
Can't speak for those guys, but I bought a refurbished unit. An i5 with all the bells and whistles that comes to a bit over $1600 new on the dell site and mine was a bit under a $1000. Have to use the 15% off outlet laptop coupon which expires tomorrow.
For what I plan to use it for, no reason to wait for SB unless I thought it would bring i5 prices down significantly. I thought I got a good deal so went for it. -
Same here. Mine just came today and I now on it. I am trying to figure out how things work. No manual with the refurbished ones.

I also have mixed feelings about returning my L501x for a L502x. On one hand, I would like the new tech (SB). However, my L501x with the AUO17ED LCD and backlit keyboard was $695 new (after all discounts). No pricing yet for the L502x, but it would not surprise me if base price was $1249 with the AUO17ED LCD (as the L702x base price is being reported as $1449). Assuming this base pricing and no discounts, does it make sense to return my L501x and pay an additional $554 ($1249-$695) just to have a L502x?
On another concern....possible heat issues for gamers.
As some L501x owners have reported heat issues, I wonder how much hotter a L502x will run when you load it up with a faster CPU and GPU for gaming? It doesn't have 2 fans like the Alienware m15x.
-
Yeah I'm kinda scared about price too. I really want a sub 1000 with the 1080p screen.
As for your heating concern tho, new CPUs, while faster are almost always cooler. Can't say the same for GPU tho but since these are rebrands it'll be the same if not cooler. -
What are the odds that the L502x will be under $1000. Without any upgrades ?
-
I cancelled my L501 order earlier in the week and told them why. Dell called me this afternoon but I was unable to answer and are trying to get to me to call them back in order to place a new order with them, but I assume they just do this with everyone who cancels their order and sayd they're buying a different spec? so I don't think they'll be able to sort me out with anything regarding the L502 yet, but when I call them back I will be asking about it.
-
I did the same and explained why. They were just happy that I was still going to buy from them again. The customer service has been stellar!
-
The redesigned Sony F Series 3D notebook (with its LED screen) is very likely to overshadow the L502x.
-
At CES Sony said that the new Sony F will START at $1699.99. Assuming the L502X will be a similar price to the current L501X, thats a huge different in price, and can't really be compared to the Sony F.
-
Like all of you I am tempted to cancel my current L501x production to wait for the SB. However I don't think I will given that was able to get my system which includes B+RGLED 1080p, i5 460m 2.53Ghz, 420m 1Gb, 500Gb hd, 4Gb ram and backlit keyboard for only $ 803 + tax. And there there's also the potential heating issue with the SB. I guess at the end of the day, we need to be satisfied at the moment since tech evolves at an incalculable rate.
-
Wow, that's an amazing price. Did you pick that up from the Outlet, or are you using a special coupon code?
-
His is probably a refurbished system
-
Nope brand new with a one time Dell EPP code=P
-
I'll wait for XPS L503...
-
I advise you hold it for the L505b instead. I'm told it'll pack the mighty GT660M and a i7-3630qm.
-
The GPU is probably just a rebrand.
-
Are there any plans for an L402x? Possibly with USB 3.0 pretty please? :\
-
LAWLZ you jokesters
-
I hope that new keyboard will fit the L501. That's my only gripe about this notebook. -
Looks like a great system.
-
Did u see that rofl².
I want a GDDR5 540M on the L502. Or a 555M would be even better but inappropriate I guess. -
Sense the sarcasm.
EDIT: What type of i5 processor should we expect to see the the L502X?
