    Hi,
I'm trying to get 5.1 sound through HDMI on my XPS M1330 with my Sony HT-CT 100 soundbar.

Is there any way to get 5.1, because I always get 2.0 .

There is no real way just better to get a 5.1 speaker system, plus i don't know many tele's that are even made with 5.1 through the speakers.

I always thought that you could output full 5.1 Dolby Digital / DTS via the HDMI port. There should be a setting in the menu system. Obviously this only works if you application has been told to output full 5.1 audio. Some codecs are defaulted to your standard speaker configuration (stereo) and you have to amend them to output full 5.1 digitally over HDMI. Alternatively you can output analogue 5.1 audio via the three 3.5mm jacks on the front edge of the laptop. All you do is go to the audio properties and tell it what each port does (e.g. one will be front left/right, one will be rear left/right and the other will be centre and sub woofer).

Alternatively you can buy an express card 5.1 audio. I bought the Creative X-Fi Notebook (I don't think this is available any more) as my amp could not decode audio from the HDMI port so I needed an digital optical output, which this provided. Have a search around the web as there may be other similar devices available.

If you need any other info, post up.

Ok.. Interesting. I can get 5.1 when watching a movie actually (through HDMI). Is there a way to get 5.1 when I play music?

Not unless it was digitally encoded that way such as you might find on certain SACD's.
