No manufacturer "makes" laptops. They source ODMs to make the designs and are generally assembled in Asia. Dell, HP, Toshiba all they do is put their name on the final product and deal with warranty.

All new Dell lappies are made in China, then shipped to your local hub for shipping. Refurbs are refurbished by a third party contractor and shipped within the US.

If all Dell laptops are made in China, why do Dell restrict the options so much for those markets outside USA? If the same factory is making laptops for USA and other countries you would think we would all have similar options. I am in the UK and would love to order an XPS 17 with a full HD screen (non 3D) and 6230 wireless like you can in the States.

    from wiki:
Dell opened plants in Penang, Malaysia in 1995, and in Xiamen, China in 1999. These facilities serve the Asian market and assemble 95% of Dell notebooks.

In 2007 the Chennai, India facility had the target of producing 400,000 desktop PCs, and plans envisaged it starting to produce notebook PCs and other products in the second half of 2007.

Update: I just called a customer rep about my l502x order and she told me that my laptop will be shipped from the US. Then I ask her 'Where exactly is my laptop manufactured?' she said 'US'....

@LaptopCreepy I'm guessing Dell gives priority to US buyers so they'll allocate limited inventory of options for other countries. As long as it's in the tech specs page, chat with a rep and if it's not out of stock ask for it. I saw the .co.uk page and you have up to Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N + WiMAX 6250 802.11 a/g/n. ( I can't find the non 3d though )

I know 99% of manufacturing is in asia I was curious since as you can see by the posts already Dell as usual gives us a different answer. My rep said my alienware is malasia & dell told me maybe china or usa??? I was just curious as I said if I call dell now they'll tell me made in outer space.LOL Thanks for replies guys.

The 6250 might be listed as part of the spec but neither the configurator or the sales rep will offer you more than a 1030 in the UK. The sales person said they will email me when the 6230 and fhd screen become available; which is probably never.

But Sabrina, the point is ,in the US you do get a lot more configuration options then we do in Europe ,which can be very frustrating
This issue with the non 3D 1080p LCD still not been available in Europe is a bit of a joke, and is stopping a lot of people here in Europe from purchasing the XPS17 L702x.
If I were a stock holder in Dell  and read the feedback from the online laptop/notebook forums about this issue I would not like what I was reading, and ask the question, why it was not available to every Dell customer who wants to purchase there products.

Spot on Chris. The money that Dell are losing by not offering all the options must be huge. It also leaves a slightly bitter taste in the mouth how Dell treat non-US orders. However, at least they do offer some options unlike HP who offer no customisation in the UK (or Europe for that matter).

I have just gotten off the phone with Dell Executive Customer support. Apparently Dell are phasing out the 6230 wireless option, and eventually it will disappear off the US site. I said I found it hard to believe that Dell are stopping this option when so many people wanted it. I have my doubts that what I was told was correct but if it is then Dell have made a serious blunder. There was no news on when the fhd screen would be more widely available.
