I have a 3 week old Studio XPS 1645 and the original order and configuration show a 500gb 7200 Seagate Free Fall Sensor HD but it came with a Hitachi 500gb 7200 Travelstar HD. I questioned it with Dell Support ( North America for the 1st year) and the first tech said he did not know if the Hitachi had the free fall sensor and the 2nd tech said it did? Is it really worth it if the Hitachi does noy have it to have to change our hard drives and reload ny data..................Thanks.![]()

I would say that freefall sensor is definately worth it. It will detect a sudden movement and will park the hard drive to prevent damage from a fall or other similar motion.
From experience in a desktop computer, the computer was dumped on its side and the hard drive was unusable. If it had a free fall sensor in it, it would have been fine. -
Mine is 2 weeks old. Same thing. I'm not too sure but here's what I found. Hitachi doesn't say so but Dell said yes about an older Hitachi.
Mine is hts725050a9a362, closest info from Hitachi is this:

Link of Dell saying "yes" for older model Hitachi from that discussion: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/P167228/intro.htm
I decided to transfer a large file and to a normal laptop movement style light "jiggle." The HDD indicator light stayed on, but the drive made a parking noise, so I have no idea.
