Going to try to keep this short and sweet. I am being offered a system with a much better processor and graphics card, but there are some serious things missing (which can be added to the 1458), such as, backlit keyboard, the SSD. I do use the backlit keyboard often, and the SSD is the main reason I got the XPS in the first place. Should I call and ask for the same specs as the 1340, or just accept the system they are offering me?

My old specs on XPS 1340:
    C2D 2.53Ghz processor
    4gb ram
    9500m graphics
    128GB SSD
    LED

    Replacement in progess Studio 1458.
    i7 720 processor
    ATI 5450 1gb GPU
    500 gb Hard drive
    720p HD led display
    4gb ram

all specs need to be same or better- Dell can not upgrade one part to justify a downgrade in another-

Escalate your case.. you should get a 128SSD and keyboard-

Short answer: NO, don't accept the system as is. It seems like they're trying to compensate for the removal of the SSD by giving you an i7-720 but, for example, an i5-540 + SSD will give you much better performance than the i7-720+500GB 7200prm. That SSD is quite a performance booster, so don't let them take that away. Also apart from Directx 11 and a 40nm processing size, it is even questionable as to whether the 5450 is better than the 9500m. Frankly, I think the replacement would perform slower. Plus you're going from an XPS to a studio... I'd suggest asking for the same specs which Dell should at the very least honor. Don't lose the SSD though, and don't let them short-change you.

Thanks. Called Dell and they are going to fix the issue. Got a case# and the rep's name just in case they try to lie about it.

I got a call today saying that the backlit keyboard is a go, but the Studio 1458 doesn't have the option of having a SSD. I then asked if I could take out the SSD from my current system and he said that was ok. I am satisfied with that. As a bonus, I don't have to worry about wiping the SSD before shipping it back to Dell.

Thanks. now i want to know if I can take the optical drive out and make a SSD HDD system. I cannot find a caddy for the 1458 yet though.

Optical drives have an internationalized standard size and port mapping. What fits your laptop, fits every other laptop in the world. You just have to care if yours is slot-loading or not ;)
The only thing that could be different is the front bezel of the drive which could be manufacturer specific, if they e.g. have an eject key for the drive unit integrated.
Oh, and of course whether it is sata or ide ;)
