    Hey guys,

I am looking at purchasing the Dell XPS 17 and am trying to find out if any of you who already have the XPS 17 have noticed any issues with the displays. Please mention whether you have the gloss or non gloss display.

Most dell displays I have seen (non gloss ones) the displays are clear and fonts are sharp the pixels are a little snowy but this is fine for me.

On some Dell's, HPs, Toshiba's I have seen screens where the display does look like it has thin verticle lines through it. So a light plain grey area would look like it had thin slightly dark stripes running down it. In other words it doesn't look smooth. Almost looks textured not snowy.

I am mostly a gamer and am undecided whether to get the 1600x900 TL or 1920x1080 AG. I am paranoid about the screen. Any comments would be appreciated :)

If you are a gamer and paranoic about the screen quality, its a no brainer. I would go straight away for the 1920x1080 one.

After seeing a 1080p resolution on a laptop, my next shop will be a new LCD for my laptop...

I had both. I much prefer the 1080p AG screen. I HATE glossy screens, the 900p wasn't bad but it was quite shiny, and honestly way too bright as well. The AG is a solid screen, no lining to it as you say, and I often have lots of gray up on-screen (backgrounds and such).

I'm not a gamer but the 1080P TL screen rocks :)

Don't get the 1600x900 screen, the resolution is too low for 17.3 inches. It makes things onscreen big and limits how much you can fit onscreen. 1600x900 resolution is meant for 14" and 15.6" laptops. Plus, most 17.3" 1600x900 screens have mediocre image quality. The XPS 17's 1600x900 screen may not be awful, but the resolution is still a bit low for a screen this large, and contrast may be a bit low.

The screen is the most important upgrade.

That's image-griddiness. Many low-end screens have this, and I suspect the 1600x900 screen in the XPS 17 is one of them.

Thanks for the replies. I was looking at the 1920x1080 AG screen. But I like the way the colours look on the TL screen but don't need 3D. For me it's an extra $500NZ to get the 1920x1080 TL.

Does anyone have the one with the AG screen? How is it for colours and brightness? Are you able to post a screenshot??

The stripes thing kinda looks like this: But of course the stripes are less prominent and thinner but noticeble. Reminds me of a 1980's CRT screen

I have the AG screen referenced. Colors are decent, brightness is well less than the glossy, as is typical of matte, but I still don't run it over 65% on AC. Can't post a screenie though right now.

I know what you mean by sorta like the CRT thing. I haven't noticed anything like what you posted.

Quickly took a few pictures for you, for reference the 2 left monitors are Dell U2711's. They should be fairly accurate colour wise, using a calibrated profile with custom settings.

The laptop screen is a Anti glare 1080p, I love it (though, I really hate glossy screens). I will say the colours seem a little off.

If you want any more comparisons let me know. Oh, the full blue one didn't come out right.

It's unlikely that colors will be better on the 1600x900 TL screen than the 1920x1080 AG screen. Most 17.3" 1600x900 screens have low contrast, which results in colors looking less vibrant no matter what.

The 1920x1080 anti-glare screen has both higher contrast and a higher color gamut.

If you want a glossy screen, don't buy the XPS 17. Find something that'll get you 1920x1080, glossy, and 17.3", such as:
    - Sager NP5175 Custom Laptop (Built on the Clevo W170HR)
    - Satori P170HM - MALIBAL
    - Amazon.com: ASUS N73SV-A3 17.3-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop - Silver Aluminum: Computers & Accessories

Matte is almost always better. Try working in direct sunlight with a glossy screen.

Only thing glossy is good for is to see if someone behind you is watching what you are doing.

Thanks a lot for the reference, nice pics! Looks ok for colours. The white one did look a little grey or is it just the angle of the laptop screen? How does the white screen on the laptop look for you?

    Appreciate the comments very helpful.

Dell XPS l702 AG screen is very good in my opinion. The only downside is that colors are a little bit off even after calibration with x-rite eye-one, so if you plan working with photoshop, look for the other screen. Here is professional review of this particular AG screen: Review Deviltech Fragbook Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews
