How are these working with your Studio XPS 13/16 notebooks?

My wife has a 13 and I have a 16, and we're needing to pick up a couple coolers for game sessions.

To be blunt, I find myself doubting that they could provide a truly outstanding performance on the XPS due to the vent placement on the cooler in relation to the intakes on the XPS.

In fact, when I look at a top-down view of the coolers and the bottom of our laptops, the vents really only get about 10% coverage.

Does anyone have any other coolers they are running that better then the zalmans? If they're the best then I'll grab a 1000 for the wifey and a 2000 for myself.

    Thanks guys!

same here. I was about to get one but noticed that the vents are like only upto 3/4s or 1/2 of the surface and the vent on my 1530 is way above in the upper left corner. Im now considering the coolermaster notepal infinite which has a mesh/vents all over the place..

it does help. I gotta tell you, if you use the laptop all by itself, it's going to be hot like crazy. Overall, the zalman 2000 is very well-built, very good quality. It should take down the temp by about....5-10 C degrees. I wont trust any other brand than zalman though, its expensive but worth it

IMHO they are the best, they are silent, they act as an enormous heatsink because they are made of aluminum, and they have given me the best results compared to other coolers that had fans right below my laptop´s air intake.

I had an m1530, which has a similar design in terms of fan placement to the new sxps line, and it lowered my temps about 15C! ( from about 93C to 78C on the GPU, meaning no more throttling and a very enjoyable gaming experience )

I highly recommend them, i have to accept they are not cheap, but are well worth the money :D

I have a NC2000 and studio xps 1640, it perfectly covers all the intakes plus my palm rest never heats up anymore. I love it, one of the best investments Ive made.

I had a 16" Studio XPS (in sig) and loved having the NC2000. WIthout it, my palm rests were hot, made me sweat and grease all over. The NC2000 (I don't have numbers before and after) kept my temperature down tremendously. NC2000 With undervolt and MX-3 my GPU temps never got over 71C (3670).. I forget the CPU temps though on gaming load.

So many people have the wrong idea about laptop coolers...

They are NOT just for pushing more air into the fans...they are LAPTOP coolers...the fans on the coolers are intended to cool the whole laptop, so it doesn't matter if the fans don't line up...I don't have one yet, but the NC2000 is the best for he XPS and I'll be getting one soon.

isnt that the whole idea of laptop/notebook coolers, to push more air into the laptop vents? So that its critical parts (cpu, gpu, hdd) will have adequate ventilation, hence the laptop gets "cooler"? Its not a like refrigerator or something that transfer its coldness into the laptop as long as it hit any of its surface. :) And how do you make sure the air gets into the vents? By making sure they line up to each other..

Zlog, let me know the results of your NC2000...

I've used a Zalman 1000 for a while and they are great, but if you want something big enough to fit with air flow better than even the 2000, try this out, it fits my studio xps 16 perfectly and the air flow is amazing, a bit more expensive, very well made and performs better than most I tried.

comes in black or silver, Black goes well with our laptop.

The Cryo has caught my eye before, and it looks well made. Is there a noticeable drop in temperature versus the Zalman?

    -durable
    -lowers temps 10-20c
-no FPS drops after long hours of gaming
-NC200 is the perfect size for the SXPS16
    -adjustable speeds
    -quite
    -portable (albeit a bit heavy)

Honestly that should be enough reason.

Actually it's not....if that was the case, why don't they make them much smaller (say the width of the fans)....because the air is distributed all over the underside of the laptop.

It's the same reason your laptop will stay cooler if you raise it off the desk...air can circulate underneath and so more of the heat is removed.

    Hello,

I have a Dell Precision M90 laptop workstation. I just bought a zalman 2000 cooler, and it doesn't seem to be keeping the laptop cool at all. Esp when i run avi files. I was doing better putting cold water in a water bottle and keeping it under the laptop. What am i doing wrong??? I have the zalman on full blast.

    Thank you.

Scotsman, in the case of the 1645 and the Zalman cooler you are correct. However the majority of coolers are plastic which doesn't conduct heat, and the vast majority of laptops have a plastic base thats thick enough to insulate a lot of heat. Having air blow on the bottom of a plastic-based laptop will do next to nothing.

In the case of these Dell XPS 13 and 16 models, they have a metal base cover and the Zalman coolers have that thick metal plate on them. This DOES seem to cool the Dell XPS quite well. Both my wife's 13 and my 16 are running very cool now.

The fact doesn't change though that getting cool air circulating into the vents is going to be the real benefit though.

Um, if you're having to put a bottle of cold water under your computer, then i think the answer to your question "what am i doing wrong?" might be "everything" :p

    I'd be calling Dell.
