I have seen all threads about Media Direct partition and dual booting, and still have a question:

    - I want to install XP without uninstalling Vista, to be able to dual boot.
    - I DO NOT want to reinstall Vista.
    - I DO NOT want to format my C: drive.
    - I don't mind losing Media Direct forever

is it OK if I do this?:

    1. delete the 2.5GB (MediaDirect) partition from Windows Vista (right click "Computer", click "Manage", right click the 2.5 GB partition and choose "delete volume".

    2. Then create a new partition using that free space left (and maybe some more by shrinking C :).

    3. Install XP into that new partition and fix the bootloader from Vista DVD.

Is there any problem with this scenario?

I really would not like to brick my laptop...

    thanks!

is it really that simple to kill Media Direct without having to reinstall Vista? just delete the whole partition?
