on my other post, no one gave me an approximate number. So those of you who own an xps 1730 please anwser my questions. BTW if I did order my 1730, I would go with the extreme core cpu, dual sli 8800 gtx, 4 gigs of memory.

    1. Batter life on the xps when im not gaming, when im surfing the net and doing word processing (WITH one card Enabled and WITH two cards enabled please)

    2. How long would it last if I was gaming (I know it wont last long and I shouldnt play it without it being plugged in but I just want numbers)

    2. Is there a way to turn down settings so it last longer when im doing non gaming stuff?

    Thank you

You're going to get maybe 1 hour 20 mins of light internet browsing if you use the 'Power saver' power profile (if not using wireless to connect to the internet).

For gaming, you'll be lucky to get 50 minutes.

There's a reason the M1730 is referred to as a desknote rather than a laptop ;)

If you are really concerned about battery life, this isnt the laptop for you.
Performance takes a very hard hit when running off of battery power, and gaming is made much harder!
I recommend you look for a 1710 or something if you need long battery life, since this one drams the battery like crazy, and to get the best out of it, it always needs to be plugged into the mains.
Personally I feel its a desktop replacement system, that is portable enough to carry to LAN events, if you go to any, now and then, and thats it.

    What he said....

The 17" monster machines (sli etc...) are about desktop like performance in a "luggable" form factor....

If you want a true laptop then looking at a single card machine like the 1530 or m15x depending what type of games you want to play may be more sensible.

I only want a laptop as I lost my study so need my machine to be tidyupable (is that a real word :err: ) so that i can put it away when I am not using it..

Doing that with a desktop is not always a reasonable thing to do..

    Cheers

Mate, for something with ok battery life and fairly portable, but still with excellent performance, you might want to consider a look at the Alienware M15x. But it is very expensive!

Games will not run smoothly if the system is ran on battery because the GPU will not be getting the power it's supposed to get.

If you are considering this system to run on battery, you are loooking into a wrong system. This system should be plugged in to work like it should.

What battery do you have? My 1520 (different of course) has the 85 whr battery - it can only provide 85 watts.

I've noticed that during gaming, my power adapter (110w) can't charge the battery because the laptop is taking up 110w.

If you want to increase your battery life, I've had positive results doing crazy underclocks with the video card - in "power save" mode, my 8600 is turned down to 55mhz on everything.

    Thanks for your feedbacks

Yes I understand why its called a desktop replacement, I just wanted to know the battery life because I was curious. So can someone confirm what vinhalpusher said about the battery life?

I know the battery life wouldn't be good, I just wanted to know an accurate number on the battery life without gaming and with gaming thanks

I get about 70 min on Balanced, browsing the internet. I wouldn't bother running games on battery. IIRC SLI is disabled on battery so performance would suck as well as battery life.
