If there's a crystal nearby which says 14 Mhz on it then that's most likely it.

Just take the back off already. There are a grand total of ten screws, nothing difficult.

omm... that pic is not mine.. its from another NBR thread. And from the pictures it looks like the CPU (heatsink taken off) and im not keen to reapply thermal paste once i've taken it out ..

does it look like SLG to you?

I was refering to the one at the very top in the moddle, not the CPU or GPU. It looks like it could say SLG on it, but equally it could also say "5LC". I have the 1640 so I can't tell you what it is from mine.

The heatsink shouldn't be covering it though, if you just take the backplate off then you should be able to see it.

ATTENTION ALL Studio XPS 1647 (maybe other models im not sure) !!

i have found the PLL!!! Hidden under the wireless card (and black label)
sorry no pictures as my phone camera is totally rubbish~

SLG8SP585V (its really tiny, the last alphabet is V or Y i cant tell)
    K700005LWC
    0951 TAIWAN

these rows are positioned exactly as seen on the chip itself. the last 2 rows i have no idea what they stand for.

now can anyone hope to overclock their SXPS 16?

You should check first to see if it's supported in setFSB already. Quite a few are supported out of the box.

I'd be weary about asking the guy to add it though, he's not the easiest person to convince. I tried to ask him a few months ago as nicely as I could if he could look into adding the 1640 PLL when he had some time spare. His reply came across as quite rude if I'm honest, though it might just be because he's japanese and hasn't yet have picked up on the small subtleties in english which can say different things (he might have really meant to say "I'm sorry but I don't have the time"). Anyway, he basically said he wanted a bit of money for it, I wasn't sure if he was joking or not, but said that I'm sure we could chip in a little bit, I've never had a reply since. If you know someone fluent in japanese who could write to him then you might get a better response.

However, you also have to bear in mind that just because a PLL is supported in setFSB there's no guarantee that it will work. Sometimes a pinmod is required to get full control.

Also, I didn't realise the layouts would be so similar. If I had known then I would have told you to look under that black plastic, since that's where I found it on my 1640.

You should look into the bios to see what options there are. In the 1640, there are quite a few options which are disabled by default which could be brought back by modding, some of which look like they may control base clocks. The BIOS image can be extracted by using the "/writeromfile" switch on the main bios exe through CMD. Then you can use phoenixmodtool to extract the seperate files from the rom. Then you use PBE to search the strings to find anything interesting. I could do this myself, but ultimately it's better and more rewarding to find out how to do these things for yourself. Also, by doing this you also give yourself access to the VBIOS, which allows you to do things like permanent overlcocks while still retaining powerplay functionality and possibly a voltage increase. To mod the VBIOS you'll need RBE (I tend to use acronyms for these things, but if you google round then you'll be able to find what you need).

hmm i've googled more.. seems that Abo has no way to overclock with this particular PLL. Previously others have already tried mailing him. Too bad since i studied japanese ><"

Im looking into setPLL currently.. but its really too complicated.

GPU im not worried about.. rivatuner solves my troubles already ;) only looking to oc the i5.. (jealous of my roommate's 1645 lol)

funky monk... the /writeromfile command doesnt seem to make any ROMs anywhere, but instead it runs the flashing program itself! Its as if im simply launching it..

im not sure if its coz i typed wrongly?
my CMD line is like this:
    C:\dell\drivers\R277706\1647_A09.exe /writeromfile

I have the BIOS1.wph and BIOS.bak files.. will these be of any use?

Edit: I also tried to use the writeromfile command on the WinPhlash64.exe (being crazy and clueless). Gives me error "Command line options error. Please check your input!"

That's a little odd. Seems the 1647 doesn't use ROM images anymore. You can find it all in the temp folders though.

I made the *false" assumption that the 1647 would still use old school BIOS files.
