    Hi,

I would like to set the Ownership Tag and Asset Tag on my XPS M1730, but can find no software included with my laptop to help me do so.

At the moment both fields are blank - I obviously would like to make my machine personally identifiable for my piece of mind.

Does anyone have or know of any software that will allow me to set the tags on my machine.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Regards

    Andy

I can't say for that machine in particular as I haven't received my 1730 yet but I have set the asset tag on other dell machines just by going in to the bios.

The fields aren't set - and can't be set in the BIOS, which is understandable.

I know you can set a password which basically prevents you from changing the owner and asset tags once they are set.

It would be nice to set the ownership tag to protect my investment.

there's a tool on dell's site for it. should also be a white paper. i think it jacks up your Service Tag tho. can't remember.

It really wont stop anyone from stealing your laptop. Your best bet is to use the system password that prompts for a password immediately when the computer is turned on or comes back from standby.

Yes, I forgot to mention - that I sorted it last nite - found a archive called Svctag on a website called ihatedell.info (strange website title!)

I used the USB key version - and it worked fine - set the Asset tag to my house number and post code and set the ownership tag too - adds that personal touch when I switch the machine on.
