hi, I just started having a problem with my XPS m1530

there will be a beep/click from the computer (I think from the hard drive)

then programs will stop responding/not open

after a while the entire computer will freeze up

this has happened with 10 min of restarting several times, and is extremely frustrating

    I'll upload a dxdiag in a few minutes (after it's frozen =/)

So this is intermittent, not every time you bot up? As a long shot, you may also want to check your scheduled tasks, start up, and Vista's admin performance monitor. If you think it is coming from the hard drive, try to get the S.M.A.R.T. information as well.

it's happened intermittently in the past, but over the past hour, it has been every time I've started up

for instance, there was 1 freeze between the first post and this post

Did you check any of the above items I mentioned? It could be a bad start up program or device driver. Take a look at any recent installation or your start to see if anything looks new/unusual.
