Recently my xps 15 has been getting extremely overheated even while in sleep mode. I put the computer to sleep, then in a case, and when I go to get it out its hot to the touch and the battery drained. I would like to know if this a hardware or a software issue since it is so new, any response would be greatly appreciated.

I'd return it. That should not be happening.

Be sure to check if your system is actually sleeping, seeing as it is hot: it most probably isn't. This is most likely not an XPS/Dell problem, but a software problem in Windows.

Either you laptop is not sleeping when you close the laptop, or you might have a different issue. Recently someone on reddit thought his laptop was sleeping, but it was actually in a mode called "Modern Standby". Basically, this Modern Standby mode allowed the laptop to still be connected to the internet and download emails and such, while appearing to sleep.

The problem is that your laptop isn't going to sleep. It's a software-related issue. Go into Windows Control Panel --> Power Options, and change the on/off/sleep/hibernate behavior of the laptop (sometimes called "Choose what closing the lid does").

The battery gets drained because your laptop is still running, and not in true sleep mode or powered off. The laptop gets hot because there isn't ventilation for air cooling the internal laptop components when you stick it inside a case.

Go to power options, click on change plan settings on the active profile (and any others you use) then change advanced power settings. Under sleep see if "allow wake timers" are on, disable them if they are. This will stop it turning on to check for updates and never turning back of for some reason, another factor can be wireless wake on LAN that can be disabled in the BIOS.

Mine will lose a few percent a day in sleep and never get warm unless something prevents it going to sleep but that can be checked by tapping the power button and seeing if it stays off for more than a few seconds.

There is a known issue of the "Hibernate after" option which should auto switchover from sleep to hibernate after a specified time, but wakes instead. Set to 0 (never).

I see that happen as it logs into teamviewer but that is just a minute whilst it hibernates?

Regularly, it wakes just for a moment to switch over and hibernates right away. But with the bug, the hibernation part fails, and the laptop remains in an undead limbo state (appears to work but some things fail, it may wake after a couple of seconds aftre you put it to sleep/hibernate/shutdown) from which you can get it with hard reset 5sec pwr button.
