    can the XPS 1640 handle a SATA2 drive?

    I think the Seagate 320 7200rpm is failing on me... (unless it's the memory still need to run a mem test)

    If I replace the drive with a SATA2 drive..will the laptop handle it?

    Yes, SXPS 1640 is actually adapted to work with SATA II (3Gb/s) disks (HDD or SSD).
