Only GPU expansion would be via the mPCIe slot by doing a DIY eGPU implementation. eg: XPS 15 L502x [email protected] here.

Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
XPS 17 has PGA processor, it can be upgraded.
As the others have stated above, the GPU and VRAM are soldered onto the motherboard. The only upgrade would be buying a whole new motherboard or nando4's suggestion. -
People have upgraded the CPU with no trouble on the l502x/l702x (XPS 15 and 17). GPU is not going to happen I'm afraid. And even the gaming systems that support upgradable GPUs are limited in the options because of the lack of a consistent standard unlike desktop GPUs.

Adding an external GPU (eGPU) is basically slaving a desktop graphics card to the laptop. Not a very portable solution. Also, the mPCIe bandwidth is limited, so I don't think you get the full external GPU's power either, but I could be wrong on that, never bothered to look into it.
can the gpu/cpu of an XPS17 be upgraded?
