I have been able to connect my M1330 to an HDTV through HDMI, VGA, and even DVI with a converter. I don't actually need to connect it to an SDTV in my own home, but I would like to have the option if I was ever out at a friend's house or something. There is obviously no S-Video like on the M1530 and many other laptops, so how does the M1330 connect to an SDTV? Is it simply a post-standard definition laptop or is there a way to make one of these ports connect to an S-Video or to red/white/yellow AV Jacks?

Mistake me if I'm wrong, but I think you're out of luck. Good thing you have the HDTV though :)

I would say it is not worth it. I have found that across both my laptops s-video has been the most temperamental thing in the world. If it comes to going sd, just use your screen.

Any reasoning as to why Dell make the laptop like this? Is it simply a space-saving measure to make it small and light? Or is it also an acknowledgment of the fact that regular tvs are on the way out as LCD TVs with HDMI ports become cheaper and cheaper? It's probably mostly the former and a little bit of the latter, considering the damn M1530 has got an S-Video port.

Probably both. S-Video is an old port that really isn't needed at all. Even VGA should be replaced by at least a DVI port, since it can still carry analog signal. VGA to s-video connectors exist too.

I have seen those VGA to s-video cables around but they have always seemed strange to me. Why do they seem like they're about 6 inches long in every picture I've ever seen of them? If I could get one of those that was 6 feet long and did this job I would in a heartbeat.

using s-video to connect a laptop to a SDTV looks horrible. the laptop resolution goes to like 600 x 480. . . embrace higher resolutions!

If I knew it would work I would buy it. I have no idea. I just don't understand why every time I see one of those cables it is so damn short. I guess if it did work you could buy an S-Video Female to Male in addition to that in order to extend it. Seems like a hell of a hassle but it probably still wouldn't be too expensive. I would do it if I was assured of its working

I agree it does not look very good. That is why I use HDMI and occasionally VGA. If you read my original post it says that this cable would only be for if I was ever in a circumstance where I would need to connect to an SDTV. It is certainly not the norm of what I would be doing nor is it my TV type of choice.

yeah i only need it to work on an SD tv while im at work, at home i have an HDTV so the HDMI output works fine, but i'd like to know for sure if an adapter like that would work...

Yes that adapter is what you are looking for. As for will it work? I don't know if that one will, the price kind of makes me wonder. If you do use it, you can setup your laptop so that it doesn't change the resolution on the laptop itself but will output the correct SDTV resolution.

It's a bit odd the M1330 doesn't have S-Video, even my M1210 did, but it is kind of a pointless output.

its not too pointless, i like to output my slingbox on the 32" tv at work which is just a SDTV, and regular tv is only outputting 480 anyway so might as well be on a bigger tv... I just wish someone knew if that adapter worked cause i've read iffy things, some say yes, others say hell no..

I think the key is if your tv is also a monitor as in tv/monitor. If it is, the adaptors will work but if not then you will have problems hooking up a computer to it. As to how you find out if it is a monitor, I have no idea. Perhaps look it up on the manufacturor's website?
