I had a problem with my poor 1330 and motherboard stopped working... luckly i had an extended guarantee and Dell is going to replace it. However i want to backup disk data before they come to replace it just for security and tried connecting the hard disk using an external usb box connected to my desktop.

The system started installing the disk but couldn't finish succesfully, I have tried lookking for drivers manually and it seems that it's installed but cannot see the disk.

I'm using Windows 7 on the desktop. The hard disk drive is a Samsung, but don't know model.

Has anyone tried this before? Do i need some kind of drivers to connect it via usb?

    Thanks in advance :D

I've never had an external enclosure that's needed special software (at least not since the Windows 98 days). Have you tried using this box with a known good hard drive? It could be that your motherboard failure also ruined your HDD... though honestly, this is fairly unlikely.
