i heard the zalman nc2000 doesnt really cool it off enough so im wondering if the COOLER MASTER NotePal Infinite Notebook Cooler
( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834997420 )
because its more concentrated at the top where the vents are

The Zalman should work fine. I used a cooler of similar design for my Inspiron 8600 and it kept it very cool when gaming. I'm currently using the Antec Cooler To Go with my SXPS 16 which shouldn't be as effective as the Zalman, which acts as a heatsink as well as aiding air flow, but appears to be good enough as my SXPS 16's fan never kicks off.

I got the ixoft thermal pad...dont know if it helps your question...
-
im more worried about internal temps than external temp, a lot of reviews i read with the studio xps and th e zalman says it mostly keeps the outside cool and the internal temp 1 or 2 degrees cooler
-
Well, I can definitely vouch for the Cooler Master Notepal as far as internal temps go, externally, as I have mentioned in my post on the other thread, are not that affected because the ambient temp in which the laptop is used are around 30-40 degrees celcius.

would the foldable coolers on ebay help at all? their really cheap (like $1) but i don't want to order it if their completely useless.

I use the Zalman 2000 as it makes a world of difference. When I first got the 16 last week, it was almost too hot to use, even on a table. With the Zalman 2000, it is one of the coolest laptops I've ever used - and the Dell's fans don't come on at all. I keep the Zalman 2000 on high at all times and keep the 16 back about an inch from the front black stripe on the Zalman and it makes a world of difference - not to mention the Zalman is silent.
It's expensive for a cooler, but it's probably 4-5x more effective than any other cooler I've used - and I have used a lot. -
The Zalman works really well. Check out my review here http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5093023
