When configuring each machine as closely as possible, is the only real difference form factor? Is 1920x1080 on 15.6 vs 16 that big of a deal? Are there features in the 1640 i'm missing?
    thanks

There are quite a few differences:

    Design
Studio 1555 lid is available in numerous colors/designs
Studio XPS 1640 lid is Glossy Black or Red on about 2/3, with the other 1/3 being matching leather with aluminum accents dividing the two.

    Display
Studio 1555- 15.6" Full HD 1080p (1920x1080) High Brightness LED
    XPS 1640- 16.0" RGB-LED (1920x1080) Edge-to-Edge

    Memory
    Studio 1555 uses DDR2-800
    XPS 1640 uses faster DDR3-1066

    Audio
    Studio 1555- average laptop speakers
    XPS 1640- 7-watt stereo speakers w/ subwoofer

    Graphics
Studio 1555- standard Intel integrated graphics, optional ATI HD 4570
XPS 1640- standard ATI HD 3670 (a bit faster than the 4570)

The overall design and the differences in the 1080p displays are the most substantial differences. To understand the benefits of an RGB-LED display, take a look- HERE (scroll down to RGB systems)

The Studio 1555 screen is available in Edge to Edge now... just a heads up.
