    2 questions..

1)can this machine act as a desktop replacement? because the performance is great...just the screen size..

    2) is upgrading from 250GB 5400rpm - 200GB 7200rpm worth the extra 100$?

    1. Sure. Get an external monitor if screen size is an issue.
    2. It would be worth it to me. I'd rather have a faster internal HDD at a lower capacity and then get an external high-capacity driver than get a slower internal drive.

15.4 is only 1.6 inches smaller than a 17".....does that make a big difference?

I am with Crash on this one. The M1530 comes with VGA and a HDMI output so you are completely catered for any type of monitor although you may need a hdmi - dvi converter, these are cheap and easily available.

HDD is the slowest thing in your laptop so increasing its speed should have a big impact in your overall performance. Fastest is best.

Maybe think about getting the bottom of the range drive to save money like I have and then buy an aftermarket drive to suite your needs, fitting it yourself is a doddle - there are even videos on youtube to show you.

Well, it's 1.6" smaller diagonally, so a 17" screen will be about 1.5 inches wider and 0.5 inches taller.

    Yup :)

Personnaly wouldn't recommend an HDMI/DVI adaptor. There are a lot of bad comments and reviews about these. You can get an HDMI/DVI cable like I did.

i don't know about your deal. but I'll go with the lowest price hdd, and then upgrade myself, just look at sites like newegg.com and see their prices and keep in mind that you are getting 120 gig hd (which is basic for m1530) and your desired 72k rpm HD..you can sell the 120 gig or use it as external..

pay $160 here and keep them both
    i.e. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145160

@all xps1530 owners: is it possible to use 2 external monitors, 1 via vga + 1 via hdmi?

    1. If my laptop were seriously meant to be a replacement to my desktop, I would just get a large external monitor for those extended sessions - like at least a 22 inch.

    2. Don't pay 100 bucks extra for a harddrive that is almost not worth half that at this point. By the base drive. You can get a fast 320 Gb for 100 bucks right now. 500 - 1Tb drives are on the horizon as well. I expect them to rip. Save your money and battery life by staying with 5400rpm drives - if you check some reviews you will see that they are **** fast, sometimes faster than the 7200 rpm drives. Search for the Samsung Spinpoint M 320 gig to see what I mean.
