can somebody explain to me why the alienware m17x 3d model is so much more expensive than the dell xps 17" 3d model? it cant be just the name alienware surely? I am interested in buying a 3d laptop but i cant understand why the big price difference?

the alienware version has pretty lights?

ps. i asked the same question on the alienware forum to get a balanced view of both forums.

The GPU is probably the major difference. Best one XPS 17 offers is a GT 555M, which is a somewhat an average GPU(for gaming at least). Not sure about M17x, but it probably comes with the GTx 460M which is only weaker than 2 or 3 cards currently available(from nvidia, excluding dual GPU).

And all the lights and the alien head.

On major difference is size and weight of the machine. The Alienware will be a definite pain to move around, while the XPS 17 is actually much easier to, especially in a backpack.

Build Quality, upgradability, heavy duty cooling system (designed to handle upto 240W load while xps is upto 150W), and offcouse Alienware logo contributes also :D

As stated here already, the higher end video card options and the cooling to support those cards is the main thing. The xps has the same stuff otherwise. If you are a gaming junkie, the aloe ware will last you longer, but the xps will do 80% to 90% just as well for a grand less

The m17x is probably going to be more future proof for gaming than the XPS 17 but not by much. The GPU in the XPS 17 is considered avg but can still play most of todays games on high settings.
