Hi friends i am getting a dell xps 15 in 10 days. I wanted help with configuration.
I would be a little bit into gaming and more of movies and browsing. So around 5 hours gaming a week and 40 hours movies, download and browsing. I have configured the below on the dell website. Please share your expertise if this is sufficient. Question are:
    1) do i need 6 gb ram or can i downgrade to 4gb
    2) is the 2GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 540M sufficient for gaming.

2630QM is plenty for most any uses. No worries there.

Pretty much everyone is going to tell you to get the FHD screen upgrade. The 768p screen on the XPS 15 is apparently one of the worst quality 15" screens, regardless of your feelings about the pixel size. The FHD is probably the best 15" screen aside from the very pricy IPS screens.

4GB is fine, you can always upgrade that later if you want to save the money now. 8GB (2x4GB) will run you around $40-50 these days for the laptop.

As for the 540m and gaming, it runs most games fine. It won't run newer stuff at maximum specs nicely, but on around medium settings no problems. Older games, no sweat. What games are we talking here?

Sounds like the XPS is a good fit for your uses though.

If you need battery life, the 9-cell gets close to double the life as the 6-cell on a single charge. ~3 hours on 6-cell and 5-6 hours on 9-cell if doing web browsing, word processing, or other similar low-power drain uses.

    1) I would stick with 6GB.
    2) they say that the 540m is not much difference from 525m (10% more powerful). You may want to get the 525m and use the money to upgrade your display to 1920x1080, highly recommended.
    3) yes.

I would get the 540m for the sole reason that it's not something you can upgrade in the future. It's not a big step up from the 525m, but still... If you plan on having it for 3-4 years, it's a good idea.

Both the 525m and 540m seem to handle overclocking nicely as well.

Probably also worth noting the the 2Gb VRAM for the 540m is overkill. It's stupid to tack on another 1 Gb because all it does is jack up the price :(

Oh and seriously, get the 1080p screen. Both your processor speed and graphics card upgrades should take a back seat to the screen upgrade.

Do not buy the Dell XPS 15 with the 1366x768 display. Doing so is a waste of money on the entire system. Doesn't matter what other upgrades you have, if you have the bad screen in your configuration, then ordering that configuration is simply wasting your money. Don't buy the XPS 15 without upgrading the screen, and don't prioritize any other upgrades over the screen.

The 1366x768 display in the XPS 15 is one of the worst quality 15.6" screens available right now. Low contrast gives the image a washed-out look, and extremely narrow vertical viewing angles cause color-shift in the top and bottom of the image even when looking straight on, worse when looking at an angle. Aside from obvious deficits in quality, the 1366x768 resolution is mediocre for a 15.6" screen. It makes text and things look really big and limits you to one window onscreen at once. You cannot multitask with this screen, don't try it. If you look at the specs of 11.6", 12.5", and 13.3" laptops, you'll find they all use this same resolution in significantly smaller screens.

However, the 1920x1080 B+RGLED display is one of the best quality 15.6" screens available, certainly the best available in the XPS 15's market segment. Most 1920x1080 displays are already significantly better than any 1366x768 display, but the one in the XPS 15 has exceptionally vibrant colors. Plus, 1920x1080 resolution opens up the possibility for side-by-side windows and is a more sensible resolution for a screen this large.

If money is an issue, you are going to have to forget about the GT 540M, i7-2630QM, and 6GB of RAM. None of these upgrades will make as much difference as the screen. The GT 540M is 12% faster than the GT 525M and will only make a difference during gameplay (a generally small difference at that). The i7-2630QM will sometimes make a difference for CPU-intensive tasks including some games, but the i5 is plenty for moderate gaming. 6GB of RAM... don't bother, because you can upgrade it yourself for cheaper. My point is, only take these upgrades into consideration once you already have the screen upgrade factored into the price.

I just got the xps 15 with and you for sure want the FHD screen. I also would not go lower than the 6gb memory. You will be surprised how fast it gets used my random programs.

The 540 seems to be doing fine for everything we are doing so far, although I would of liked to have seen a higher end card option.
