i am getting tired of the stupid screen. is there a way in the bios to disable it or what is it in device manager to kill it?

i dont want to install the software and have the crap load at startup to kill the brightness

You can't. Only G15's software can do that (by lowering brightness).

Buy a keyboard cover for an Inspiron 1720 or a Vostro 1700 that doesn't have a cutout for the screen?

Try getting used to the screen. I was skeptical at first when I bought my G15, but it's proven to be quite useful. The performance monitor and media controls are particularly handy.
