If you buy an expresscard with esata you will have transfer something like 300MB/s so better is USB 400. -
It should be the same as original SATA. SATA is 3Gbit/s or something and an ExpressCard x1 lane will give about 2.5 Gbit/s so the limitation will be the physical hard drive rather than any connectors.
