hello notebookreivew community
my recent purchase of an xps1530
i have noticed that my graphics in my game have not run as well
when i play counterstrike source it will be like 100 fps for like 5 mins
then all of a sudden it drops to 20 fps. its horrendous to play
other games run terrible like world of warcraft and mass effect.
is there any fix for this
is this a heat issue?
can i set my fan higher
if its faulty how do i get a new card?

first try changing your drivers, have you done that at all since getting the laptop? if it does end up being the card ud wanna call dell if you're still under warranty and they will replace it. Have you monitored your temps while playing and noticed a hike when everything starts going bad?
-
Jut as Face_Jones has said, monitor your temps. I use Rive Tuner, mainly, to monitor temps and clocks at specific times. Run this in the background and see what happens when you have issues. I believe the latest M1530s are not plagued by the bad batch of 84/8600m cards, but you may have one, unsure at this point. Also, on a side note, how is the surface you are playing on? Is it a desk or possibly a cloth covering?

im playin on a wooden desk
i use windows vista 64 bit
thx for the tips -
yea i have a new xps and my video card seems to be fine, i think the new ones are better as youve said. Hopefully its not the card but if it is dell should replace it.

aite i tried riva tuner and i tried updating the driver
after using driver cleaner as well.
its not the temperature since it stays at a constant 90 C
but the problem is after a couple mins of playin games
theres a huge drop in core speed
core clock drops ROP from 500 to 297mhz
core clock shader drops from 1026 to 594mhz
and the memory clock drops from 702 to 300 mhz
can anyone explain why its doin that and how i can fix it -
Seems you do have a faulty card/cooling system. Call Dell to RMA. There are DIY solutions, but you should be under warranty and thus should have Dell handle.
-
Modern CPUs as well as GPUs are designed to slowdown when overheated, that might explain the drop in core speed. 90C is pretty high, but not sure whether that is high enough cause it to clock down, because Ive seen people reporting 100C+ temperatures, and I myself have experienced 80~90C without any performance drop on my M1330 (but then again I wasn't playing very resource consuming games). To make sure, run a game or a 3D benchmark for more than 15/20 minutes and check the temperature.
Moreover, running 64-bit Vista wont help much either, for gaming IMO 32-bit is still better. -
im not sure what causes core drop but ive heard for that card and laptop it shouldnt go above 90C safely.
-
90C is that outside limit where it could go either RMA or just laptop design. If it is at or near this while gaming, then trying different drivers or a cooling pad is the best option. If it is above, then RMA. When I switched drivers for the first time, my temp dropped 5C. I am now using the 177.66 with a modified inf from laptopvideo2go.com and am still at 90C when overclocking, but my performance has increased by 50% over stock drivers that would normally operate with no oc at 90C. Try some different drivers and see where that leads you.

do u guys think a fresh format would work?
well it just started this problem like 2 weeks ago and ive had it for 2 months so im confused
thx for the tips -
fresh format won't change anything. If you see a temperature constant of 90oC mean when your GPU go up to 90oC it try to downclock itseft cause 90oC is way too high for your card safety. People are trying to not go higher than 80oC so... I think you have a heat problem. Drop FPS mean GPU downclock for sure. Mine even overclock at 650/1400/950 the temperature never go more than 80oC if it pass the 80oC then I have to downclock it a lil bit. BTW what is your idle temperature? If the idle temperature is high mean you'r having a problem with your GPU
-
my idle temperature is 81 C
i guess thats really bad then
so it prolly is faulty? anyway i can change without shipping out for repair since im a student -

An idle temp of 81 is definitely faulty - get straight on to dell support.
I think all dell xps' come with one year premium support (you might wan't to check your invoice for this) as standard
so they should send a technician out to replace it for you. -
actually my idle temps are 72 C is that really bad?
-
-
72 C idle is really high. Try to update your BIOS to A09. I think something wrong with your cooling system.
Can you hear the fan when it’s working? -
No second thought idle>65 is definitely a worrying scenario..get the GPU(motherboard also i guess) replaced ASAP.
faulty card in xps 1530?
