Hi. I received my xps 15 a week or two ago. Yet, I'm getting an exchange due to the fan issue.

One question: I bought the xps 15 at first with Home Premium, cuz I had a Win 7 Ultimate DVD.

Since, I'm exchanging the laptop, this technically means, I'm using a new computer. Can I still use the same serial code when installing Win 7 Ultimate?

Alittle off topic....I am going to ask for a replacement aswell due to fan issue, can you tell me are you going to send in your laptop first or wait for the replacement to arrive and then send the laptop to them? Also are you in Canada or US?

You'll just have to call MS to re-register it (if it's a retail version). I had to do this with Vista.

What kind of license did you buy with the Win 7 Ultimate? OEM, retail, or upgrade?? If retail or upgrade, then yes, you can use it on your new computer. If OEM, technically no, you're locked to the first computer you installed it on.

However, because you are getting a replacement, it should have near identical hardware, and Windows activation might recognize it as the same system and activate anyway. Worst case scenario is it fails automatic activation, and you have to call Microsoft and talk with a customer service rep (windows will give you the phone number if/when automatic activation fails), who will give you an activation code.

tl;dr you shouldn't have a problem, though you may have to manually activate by calling Microsoft.

edit: got sniped by jetcity :p

    Thanks!!!

Dell sends you a replacement with a UPS/Fedex/etc delivery slip in it. All you have to do is place it on your old one, and send it back then.

Dell XPS has fan issues?? Is this only with the 15 or all models? I just ordered a 14 so I'm hoping it'll be resolved before mine ships out

Also, for the windows, since it doesn't come with a windows CD, can I just use any windows 7 DVD and just put in the serial on the XPS?
