Have you done any other benchmarks? I mean like.. My 4GB OEM that my S-XPS 1645 has installed gets a 7.4 for the WEI.

I ordered my 8GB HyperX kit yesterday, glad to hear it's an improvement.
Also means I'll be able to disable the pagefile now without worrying about running out of RAM.

Actually, what are the benefits of having 1600Mhz ram instead of 1333Mhz?
Is there a significant performance difference apart from benchmark?

Here are my WEI scores. i7-2820QM , Stock 8GB RAM, Crucial M4 256GB. Looks like my "bottleneck" (for lack of a better word) is my stock video (NVIDIA GeForce GT 550M 1GB graphics with Optimus)

    Because the GT445M is a 144shader, 24 ROP, 192bit DDR3 card, where as the GT550M is a 96 shader, 4 ROP, 128bit DDR3 card.

The intel SB chipsets support 1600MHz.

Sure the processor must support Ram speeds, but the chipset determines the max supported speeds. Also, dell locks the speeds in the bios so we can't get 1600MHz, at lease for the L502x.

On a side note, the increase is not a noticeable difference. I've went from 1333MHz to 2000MHz ram, and the higher timings (cas latency) you must run almost offset the speed increase. Not a big deal.

2720QM and 2820QM can support DDR3 1600MHz, but DELL XPS can't support these kind of RAM, there is no Bios support.
You can check with some software the RAM frequency is sure that it run at 1333MHz.

My XPS 15 L502X with the i7 2820QM runs the Kingston HyperX 1866 at DDR3-1866 fully plug & play. No issues with post, no issues with lockups, no issues period.

The 2720QM & 2820QM are supposed to only officially support 1600, but the 1866 runs fine.

Took the WEI score from 7.5 with 8GB of 1333 to 7.9 WEI score with the HyperX.

Most BIOS's will automatically try to run whatever the default speed is the ram firmware says is the default speed & timings regardless of what is officially supported or not.

    My BIOS is A05.

A little proof to show it does in fact work.

The ram is a bit pricey, almost double the cost of 1333 ram. BUT considering I paid over $700 for 8 GB of DDR2 ram that only clocks to 1100 CL5 back in 2006 for my HTPC, it's a bargain

I've upgraded the Ram on my old XPS M1710 which required unscrewing screws is it pretty easy on the XPS 17?

Very easy, just a single captive screw on the MEM/HDD cover.

I wouldn't put too much faith in the WEI scores (get something that reports actually quantitative values). As with gpig, my ram is right up there (as are the other values, except for the harddrive).

NOPE! I'm sure helps here & there a tiny tiny bit on specific tasks, but it's not like regular 1333 is sluggish in real world usage. There's no night & day difference, but any benefits it gives are so suttle that you wont have a shockingly new experience. It takes quite a massive increase in performance to actually feel any performance gains from upgrades these days. A 533 increase in memory speed isn't what it used to be during DDR & DDR2 days especially when regular laptop Hard Drive speeds havent really increased meaningfully. A computer with a regular hard drive these days is like driving a high performance turbocharged car with a fuel pump from a Toyota Prius.

FYI, the memory works at 1866 speeds in my Lenovo y460P with a 2630QM that is supposed to not support memory over 1333 so I would doubt it is a BIOS flaw or hole specific to the XPS 15. I didnt do much testing to see if it was stable on this laptop, but 10 minutes of Prime95 didnt show any errors for what it's worth.
