7200RPM HDDs are loud, most of them. You can try playing around with the AAM value in HD Tune or NHC.

You can monitor the HDD usage when idle using Process Explorer. That may let you know if anything is still accessing the drive in the background. Also checkout the SMART data, and run a HDD diagnostic tool.
You can also boot in Safe Mode, to have minimal drivers and processes loaded, and see if the HDD is still loud or not.
Also, try toggling between AHCI and IDE, if possible.

I dunno, maybe being a seven year old OS might have something to do with it.

nope, cause 5 days ago with my 7 year old OS (before i re formatted) it worked fine...

and i re-reformatted 2 times after i found the problem, thinking it was a bad install.

    i already turned off indexing...

and it could be that... but it would have been showing HD usage if it was prefetching, and it should have been done doing that any way, by now

    extra info!

    So...

when in linux live it still goes...
it doesnt matter what HD bios settings i use...
in the bios and dos it still sounds the same
and it seems to jsut do it when ever the computer is on, in general...

    so yea...
even when i tell windows to turn off the HD after 2 mins... its still spinning i guess...

    and YES! IT'S THE HD!

cause when i took it out i had no sound problems :)
(looks for $$ for an SSD :p)...

any way.. i know it did not do this before though... so any help would be somehtin :)

    here is a wacky idea...

maybe it was being ran in 5400 rpm before?
in the bios i have the setting set to quiet (when ther eis bypass and preformance) and theese setting dont seem to make a difference...

so is ther any other way to "downclock" my HD... if that is it?

Why you dont call Dell and ask them to get a replacement ? I wouldnt play around with that crap, you bought a 7200RPM HD and it should work! If not, Dell has to come out and replace it!
I also have the 7200RPM 160GB HD in my M1530. Brand is Hitachi. Working fine and is quite...

Who made the drive? A suggestion - Post a question or ask for help from the manufacturer. The drive vendor has utilities that can set the drives in different modes.

    Well, its a fajitsu drive...

i jsut got done swapping the drives from my dads lappy and mine...
and the sound is about the same, his is a little quieter when mine or his HD is in my laptop.

if my HD is in his lappy, it is alot quieter...

so idk... i guess there is not much i can do, since its not my drive... its not the OS... something must have gotten messed up some where... oh well.... ill learn to live with it i guess... there isnt much else i can do...

    Thanks guys!

EDIT: and kw da.. ill check that out... if that doesnt help, then i guess ill ahve to live then.
    THanks

EDIT: they only had diagnostic tools... which i passed.

    nah, i already tried 09, 10, 11, 12, and 13... no different.

i guess ill just live with it, till i get a new lappy, or $500 extra for a SD :) (that aws a joke, id never spend close to the price of the computer on a harddrive :p)
