i've had this issue a little more frequently lately, both in vista and ubuntu and i think it's a hardware issue. after putting the computer to sleep (vista) or suspend (ubuntu), upon wake up, the display does not come on, keyboard and mouse are unresponsive....
the only thing i can do is power down the machine.
i'd like to know if anyone else has experienced this with their m1730, so i can send it to dell before my warranty ends in June....

I've had the same problem on an HP laptop. It seemed to be Vista-related, honestly. I installed XP after a while, and the problem went away.
Most of the time, I could close the lid again, let it go back to sleep and then when I opened the lid a second time, the screen would work. This was very common. I occasionally get calls at night for work and this was annoying. Another possibility would be to make the machine go into hibernate mode when you press the power button. That may make the wake-up time shorter than completely restarting the machine. -

but i doubt it's a Vista issue, because it happens to me in ubuntu as well.... -
That is basically switching sleep mode off so you wont get that problem of not being able to wake your system as it won't go to sleep. -
thanks for clarifying...
i don't experience problems with the pc going to sleep on it's own and most times i put it to sleep via the sleep button (in the windows orb), just having the issue upon wake up where the screen won't come on
so would doing this in my power settings reduce the chance of running into this problem ?
if that's the case, then this is a software problem, so how would i handle the problem in ubuntu ?
i still think this is more of a hardware issue or at least there's a problem with compatibility for sleep/standby and the m1730 hardware.... -
I'm not sure if its hardware because I experienced it as well on quite a few systems, all running vista though hmmm it could be vista and I recall hearing something about it to do with nvidia drivers, don't quote me on that though but it could be. I've actually found the same on this Dell XPS 24" widescreen desktop I'm typing on right at this moment and it has nvidia 8800GTX's. Only solution I have found is to turn the sleep mode off all together then you don't have that annoying problem of forcing your system to shut down and reboot so you got control on your keyboard and mouse again.
I haven't found a solution yet as to how to fix it completely so it awakes with this system. -

Yeah that will be the best option at the moment just to turn sleep mode off so if you go away from your system and return you won't find your keyboard and mouse unusable and won't have to force a shut down, I've had to do it and don't think its healthy on a system doing that lots of times so just keep the sleep mode off.
I'm certainly interested too in a solution for it so you can have sleep mode turned on and always awake your system. -
i have a feeling this is hardware related, so i will contact Dell and see if they have a fix for it.
also, i don't like to leave my machine running when i am not home or won't be using it for a while....
EDIT:
i have found a thread at Dell's community site that has the same problem, but occurs when ppl start their laptop on battery power....
http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19248179/19394677.aspx#19394677
i will try booting on battery and see if this happens to me as well.... -
update:
i reverted back to drivers 167.51 (vista x64) and restricted drivers 177 (ubuntu)....
have not tested in vista, but in ubuntu the system is waking up fine after i put it into suspend.
hardware issue ? display not waking up after ending suspend/sleep
