WUXGA screens are only hard to read if they are left with software settings designed for screens with fewer pixels -e.g. WXGA. Once the software is set to match the hardware, nothing is easier to read than a screen with as many pixels as possible.

Can you explain why this is so? Is the following statement correct:

"It is better to watch DVDs/SD-TV on a SD Screen than a HDTV 1080p Screen since when watching SD Media on a 1080p screen, it will look grainy, stretched i.e. look worse than watching the same content on a SD screen".

    THANKS!

    yea i ordered one too
expected to be shipped on the 13th of may...i really don't understand how they could be short on supply seeing they only made the option available a couple of weeks ago. n seeing that no one has reported anything regarding the screen, it must be very low on demand too. damn....ship it already

Same here, I just ordered one yesterday (Tuesday) and was told by a sales rep that the 15-day delay is only the worst case scenario and that it was possible that it would be shipped next week.

True, he was trying to sell me a laptop so he might've been too optimistic, but he upgraded my order to overnight shipping for free so at least he was understanding. I was also told that LG screens would be available for the WUSXGA screen so hopefully Dell ordered a whole lot more LGs than Samsungs.

Well, that's news. I talked to 3 CSRs over the past couple days, including one from the Federal Sales, and they said that while they do have LG WUXGAs, they are not available for the M1530s. Think I can send mine back once it gets here to have them replace it with an LG one? XD

I'm insanely curious about this - I was going to get the 1680x1000 or whatever screen with the system I'm ordering today, BUT the one-day sale today includes the 1920x1200 WUXGA screen. I'm a little unhappy with the delay, but if it is worth it, I'll go with it.

I have never had any problems watching DVD;s on my WUXGA screen. Quite the contrary. The experience is sensational. If there is distortion from "stretching", then the DVD is being run improperly. It can happen, but is easily fixed through the settings manager specific to the DVD-software. It can happen with non-HD screens too. Again, it is a software-issue, not something inherent to the hardware. I have been using UXGA/WUXGA for 8 years, have old eyes, but would never go back to anything less than HD. It is out of this world. For everything.

I guess you could do that, but just a word of caution: all panel manufacturers make good and bad panels. Example: Samsung panels found on the m1530 is TERRIBLE, but they make some of the best panels in the industry otherwise. The same could be true for LG. If i were you, I would look at the screen when I receive the laptop and see if there's anything I'm not 100% satisfied with. If there is then by all means return it for an LG screen, but if not then I would keep it since there's always the risk that your replacement(s) will all suck more than the one you receive initially. :p

Thanks antskip for the answer. Just to followup, you know how some DVD players promote the function of "Up-Scaling", is there are a way to do this in MPC and is this even needed? My XPS M1530 will have 1680 resolution, this is why I ask it.

    Thanks again

I don't have any software "Up-Scaling" option on my 15/4" WUXGA notebook, but do on my much bigger 32" HD TV. On the TV it works a treat. I think the much bigger TV screen has to work harder, and depends for final image on the ability of the software it uses, including for "Up-Scaling" (DVD to HD) . However, I would appreciate hearing from others on this issue for 15.4" screens... I have had only superb images on the notebook.

I hope it is worth waiting for.
    Ordered on 4-13-08, delayed 4-21-08, delayed 4-28-08, delayed 5-5-08.

I have a Dell 600m that has a 14.1" 1440X1050 screen that I think is the right resolution and text size, so the WUXGA I hope is close or can be adjusted to be. I work with microscopes at work and I like to see detail.

A 14" SXGA+ screen has a ppi of 142; the 15.4" WUXGA a ppi of 147, so it has slightly greater image density/clarity - so it should suit your needs fine. The WUXGA is at its best the higher the demands on detail.

I received mine today after they got my address wrong so it was delayed a day.

As for how it looks, well, I don't know as I'm at work and it's at home. Also it's Chelsea v Liverpool tonight so even when I do get home I won't be in any state to check it out.

Morning All, My first post on here but you all helped make my purchase!

Received my 1530 today with the 1920x1200 screen…. I was so worried about it after reading all the problems with the screens for this laptop!

Have to say… It’s just superb. Crisp and bright, not at all grainy. My previous laptop (an Inspiron 6000) also had a 1920x1200 screen and I’ve never had a problem reading text on it. If anything the screen on the 1530 is even more crisp and easier to read from.

    Here’s the pics!!

European keyboards have enter keys shaped like that.

And the resolution seems surprisingly easy to read, even from the picks.

Now only if they'd release an LED backlit WUXGA 15.4" panel...

I'm in sunny UK, so the enter key is prob something to do with it being a UK layout. (looks normal to me!) :D

Also... forgot to mention the specs....

    9300 2.5Mhz Duo 6mb Cache
    4 Gig ram
    8600M GT
320 5200rpm HDD (look at the specs of this drive b4 buying the 7200!)

And of course the1920x1200 screen which is just lush! :D The system seems really quick. (vista 32 is seeing 3.5 gig of ram) I'll be giving crysis a test run on it tonight.

So far I've installed Photoshop cs3, office 07 and sony Vegas Pro 8 and I have to say it rips through these applications with ease.

Also, worth mentioning... I (quickly) Edited some HD footage on Vegas and rendered it in tmpng. I was so impressed with the speed and how smoothly it handled it. If your into mobile HD editing... Look no further!

Overall (as you can guess) I'm very impressed  . Well done dell 9.5/10

Have got mine at work and am very impressed. I got a nice flat keyboard this time around so happy with build quality.

The screen is a samsung, I had thought it was going to be matte but has the gloss finish. It's the same quality as my Inspiron 6400 and vostro 1500 so happy with that.

I have the same spec as dave above however I ditched vista 32, split my 320gb hdd in 2 and installed vista 64bit on the 1st and am now in the process of puttting windows server 2008 (64bit) on the 2nd. I'll decide which one works for best for me then ditch the loser and put xp on that partition.

There's a thread here in regards to getting vista x64 installed which I used to get all the drivers needed on a usb drive before starting. Hopefully they work with server 2008.

I was impressed how quickly things were installing on it on the train this morning. Will see how it compares to my quad xeon at work once I get it all up and running.
