i might trade laptops with someone on the site. i would get his 1730 with no gpu and pop in a 8800m gtx. my question though are.

    1) i have built a pc successfully before is this just as hard or easier?
    2) is it just drop in and go?
    3) will it work with a single 8800m gtx, because DELL does not offer that on the site.

    thanks

If you can follow directions, it should be just as easy as working with a desktop. All you need to do is undo a few screws to get to the GPU, which should be drop and go for the most part (of course you need to install drivers and all).

I don't think you can get an m1730 GPU module with a single 8800m GTX. AFAIK, Dell has never shipped with the m1730 with a single 8800m GTX so you won't find such a GPU module (and of course, Dell's GPU modules are proprietary so you can't take it off an MXM machine or something).
