    hmm read through

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=81852#nhc

and other posts with people having overheating problems with their XPS's. I blew some canned air in through the vents to clear it and it helped a lot, but i still had a tech comeout to take it apart and they put new fans and a heat sink in. I want to check their speed and make sure they're working right before i stress the system, theyre much more quiet t han t he old ones i cant really tell if theyre working right

i tried both speedfan and rivatuner, neither one shows any data on fan speed or anything.

what am i doing wrong, is there some setting im missing? i checked a bunch of the plugins w ith rivatuner but didn't see anything, and speedfan shows nothing at all. how can i check their speed?

You cannot detect or control the speed of your fans. Only a few Dell notebooks (Vostro 1500 and back, business line) could with I8kfan

well i got the I8k fan.. and it seems to work ok, a little bit buggy. Seems the fans just aren't turning on themselves early enough and for some reason the one on the right *where the gpu is* is turning off a lot. I dont know if thats the fan or just what the system is telling it to do in bios.. they really should let you set those paramaters, .

i can always force start them to max but they sound kinda uneven when i do, like they whir up to max and slow down slightly them back to max *shrug* temps are still geting to high 70's a little over 80 sometimes but no shutdowns yet. is that acceptable? sounds high to me. Honestly the gpu is layed out very poorly the fan on that side is smaller than the one on the left, youd think theyd want EXTRA fans there not less

Use i8kfan to monitor, don't control it.

Let the bios do the work.

bios seems kinda shakey though, it doesn't kick in untill the mid 70s on teh gpu for some reason most of the time and if i start up a game around then thats too late and it gets really high before going down (like 90)

*shrug* if it gets bad i'll just use it to force start or a custom one

Hate to say it... but if you continue to try to override the BIOS with that ancient fangui app all you will do is KILL your GPU.

Use a different driver - try the 185.66 and later drivers. You will see a thermal drop.

    Good luck and be careful.
